I am experienced in all areas of the language arts and specialize in teaching writing. My tutoring sessions are anything but boring--they are fun, stimulating and encouraging. Students are actively involved in identifying errors and, with my help, correcting them. I explain WHY the answer or usage is incorrect and HOW to correct it. My tutoring students enjoy their sessions and those who are serious see immediate improvement in their grades. This is why I love to tutor. When my students succeed, I succeed.

First, I hold certification in early childhood education and coordinated and taught coursework for this endorsement at West Texas A&M University for 14 years. Also, I have a master's degree in English and have taught and tutored students in all aspects of language arts, including reading and writing for almost 30 years. Teaching is a passion for me.

I have a strong background in teaching phonics as it applies to beginning reading, decoding words in sight reading and in spelling. I use a variety of learning methods and materials to help students learn basic and, if applicable, advanced phonetic rules and applications. Students of all ages find my lessons to be fun, productive, and engaging.

Throughout my teaching/tutoring experience, I have emphasized the importance of study skills, specifically focusing on 1) organizational methods to include a calendar, filing system, 3-ring notebook with dividers, 2) scheduling study time, 3) study environment, 4) note taking, 5) test preparation, and 6) test taking skills as well as goal setting. When teaching a class, I give students a bonus for developing a system of their own or using the model I present. Great tutor, really knows how to interact with the student to get them involved and interested.

My son and I have only met with Donna once and in such a short period of time she was able to connect with my typically withdrawn fifteen year old. Donna is very energetic and passionate about what she does and seemed quite knowledgeable in the field of English/Writing. In my sons first session she was able to teach him simple writing fundamentals that he would be able to apply to his English lessons right away. Donna is the tutor for us, and we both look forward to our next session with her. Excited!
