About Nathan

In high school, I participated in a program which facilitated the sessions where high school students would read stories to elementary kids with the goal of instilling in the elementary aged students a love for reading. I also participated in a host of competitive public speaking competitions, including debate, at which I was quite successful.

I took far longer than normal to receive my bachelor's degree due to the financial hardships involved in paying for college. In my career, however, I never lost my passion for teaching and worked tirelessly as the head trainer for the front of house staff at various restaurants owned by Landry's which then propelled me into self employment consulting for small restaurant and bar owners.

In my last year of my undergraduate career, I participated in a research group with the Department of Psychology at Texas Tech University. After receiving my degree in Communication Studies, I began graduate work at the University of North Texas where I went on to graduate with a master's of science in Communication Studies with a special emphasis in rhetoric. Near the end of my first semester of graduate coursework, the department offered me a scholarship and teaching position. I joined the staff there and taught four different courses including Public Speaking, Introduction to Communication Studies, Rhetoric and Argument, and Intercultural Communication. I simultaneously participated in numerous university and departmental instructional seminars regarding the unique challenges facing we who teach the millennials and a graduate level seminar about Communication Pedagogy. As an instructor for the university, I was responsible for mastering the content, creating lessons, deploying a variety of teaching techniques to accommodate the various learning styles, assessment of my students and my teaching, and inspiring my students to learn by skillfully connecting content with real world applications. The experience of instructing college students is, I believe, paramount in my decision to keep teaching post graduation.

Engaging with students at the university meant a commitment to a "whatever works" strategy. Each class is a variance in age, socioeconomic, and educational background, but they are also homogeneous as consumers in the market place of courses. As an instructor, I learned to rapidly and accurately assess which students needed what so they are challenged and inspired. To that end, I consider myself both a great success and a work in progress. Part of the difficulty in the classroom situation is the student/teacher ratio. As unique people, students each have a path best taken their way. I privately tutored, as time would allow, throughout my college career. What I love about tutoring is the opportunity to work with each person without simultaneously dividing my attention among the other students.

This is the kind of dedication I bring to each of my students and it is my commitment to you. I will not tell you I know what I do not. I will discuss their needs from a tutor with each student and her/his support group and will use that discussion to cultivate a lesson plan for the student. I will also create a plan of action for my role as tutor. I will, in other words, construct the role I play as tutor so as to best attain the goals included in the lesson plan. I will assess my performance regularly to ensure that my strategies are effective for the student. I believe, based on my experience, that this ability to focus solely on the task of educating students individually based on their unique needs and personalities enables me to reach people on their own terms. Does this sound like what you, your friend, or your family member is missing?

If so, I would like to invite you to contact me at your earliest convenience. Aristotle tells us that above all else people desire knowledge. The structure of the education system is broken and there are no indicators of a shift in its trajectory. Please allow me the opportunity to help the student in your life to further their educational goals, reconnect with her/his innate curiosity, circumvent victimization by the inadequacies of the public education system, and/or gain the competitive edge for which she/he is looking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As a graduate student whose focus was rhetoric, I am intimately familiar with reading and comprehension, argument analysis and construction, and writing style and technique.

Public Speaking

I have an extensive background in public speaking. I participated in competitive public speaking throughout high school and college. I taught public speaking at the University of North Texas and served as a judge for a variety of public speaking events. I served as a moderator for the Friendswood City Council debate in 1999 and I delivered a speech in front of 350 high school students and politicians at Presidential Classroom.
