Laura is excellent even with my son who is not thrilled to be going to tutoring! She is great at pin pointing what they need to focus on and really prepares them for the tests.

Laura is very patient with my kids and knows how to explain difficult and complex concepts in an understandable way. She has an easy manner about her that puts kids at ease. And best of all, she comes to my house!

Laura's detailed descriptions of the lessons are amazing. The lessons are very personalized for each student, not cookie cutter. She does a great job of getting the students to select strategies that work for them best.

When my daughter first started seeing Laura, she had scored so low on her ACT/SAT that she wouldn't have gotten into any college. After 4 months of working with her - which including both subject matter tutoring and strategizing on test taking, my daughter scores improved so much that she was excepted to Texas Tech and University of Arkansas, among other smaller schools. Laura is very methodical - always has a game plan for the session. Did research outside of the session to help my daughter. Laura is a master at what she does. She also has great people skills and is easy to work with.

My son had his first lesson with Laura. She is very methodical and organized. We are planing on having more sessions with her to continue preparing for his ACT.

Seems to be very knowledgeable about what we need for our son! She is well organizede and he seems motivated to keep up with her goals and objectives for him. We appreciate her work with our son!

Laura seems to be organized and thorough as she continues to give us her comments about the review session and what is planned for the next teaching lesson. Since my 17 year old isn't going to be thorough in telling me what went on during the session, Laura sends me specific details on what they worked on and what she is planning for next week. She is patient and knowledgeable as my son is getting to know her and enjoying the sessions.

Laura is very patient and provided great guidance to students. My daughter is currently taking the on line ACT lesson from Laura and found her teaching methodology very helpful!! We will continue to use her service for the ACT prep.

Laura taught our son tricks on how to approach the reading section of ACTs. He left the two hour session with a positive thoughts on taking the ACT as well as requesting to continue tutoring sessions with Laura. Wonderful tutoring experience

Laura tutored our son for six weeks prior to taking his second ACT test. Not only was Laura detailed in her assignments and lessons, she was encouraging and very thorough with him on the questions he missed.

She took the time to explain the "what's, why's and how's" of the ACT questions; she gave him tips and shared clues as to how to find the root of the questions and to sort through the non-essential portions of each question. When he was successful in answering 99% of the sample test questions correctly; she praised him, both on site and in writing with the lesson overview.

He felt more prepared for the ACT with Laura's assistance than when he took it the first time under the tutorials of the "big box" tutoring companies. Laura also helped him with tutoring on his final exam for Pre-AP Algebra; I only wish I had found Laura many months earlier.

We will continue to reach out to Laura as our son enters his Senior year in high school and into his college life.

Thank you Laura for your help; you are truly a Blessing in our life!

Laura has been an excellent tutor! She is very knowledgeable and does a great job explaining material to where it is easy to understand. I highly recommend her!!!

Laura is an excellent teacher. My daughter loves studying with her. She made solving math problems fun for her. She is punctual and very organized. She has a good grasp on her subject and can explain the subject well. I highly recommend her.

Laura helped my son with the ACT prep and he raised his score 5 points!!! He also learned some skills that will help him in college. Great job. Thank you!!

My daughter has now been meeting with Laura twice a week, and after every session she leaves learning something new and feeling confident about Algebra II. Hands down Laura should've been a teacher because it comes naturally for her.

Laura provides quick and informative feedback after each sessions. She lets us know exactly what our daughter has worked on and what is expected throughout the week.

Laura has really connected with my son and they seem to work well together. She is very knowledgeable about all aspects of the SAT/ACT testing and has really helped him improve. She has been instrumental in getting him more engaged while still having patience with his trouble areas. I highly recommend Laura!

I had my first session with Laura L. yesterday. She was very patient and explained the problems I missed slowly and thoroughly. Laura is very accommodating and comes to my home for tutoring sessions. I highly recommend Laura L. for math tutoring.

Test Preparation:

ACT English,
Approved subjects are in **bold**.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English questions test proper word usage, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, organization, style, and writing strategy. In my tutoring sessions, I have each student review and practice these concepts. If a student is taking the ACT Writing section, I include ACT essay practice as well.

ACT Math problems test reasoning skills as well as math knowledge. It can be difficult for students to finish this section in time, particularly if they’ve forgotten some math fundamentals. My ACT Math sessions cover test-taking strategies, test practice, and review of Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and basic trigonometry topics as needed.

ACT Reading questions range from finding specific facts to making inferences from the text. While it’s important to read these passages and questions carefully, slower readers may have trouble finishing in time. On the other hand, fast readers may misread questions or paragraphs to arrive at the wrong answers. My tutoring sessions include an evaluation of different approaches to find the one that works best for each student. I also include practice to help students improve their ACT Reading skills under time pressure.

ACT Science questions test a student’s reasoning skills and understanding of the scientific method. Though this section doesn’t focus on specific science knowledge, the sheer volume of data can overwhelm a student under time pressure. I help students identify the way to approach each type of passage so they don’t get stuck in “analysis paralysis”.

Algebra 1 is crucial to success in Geometry and Algebra 2. Algebra 1 also represents about 15-20% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. In my Algebra 1 sessions, I review current class notes and assignments with the student, explaining any difficult concepts or problem types. The student then practices additional problems as I check his/her understanding.

Algebra 2 is a key foundation for advanced math courses in high school and college. Algebra 2 also represents about 15-20% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. In my Algebra 2 sessions, I review current class notes and assignments with the student, explaining any difficult concepts or problem types. I also review Algebra 1 and Geometry topics as needed. The student then practices additional problems as I check his/her understanding.

Geometry requires learning a large set of theorems, postulates, corollaries, symbols and formulae. Students must understand which of these concepts to apply to any given problem. In my sessions, I help students think through the problem-solving approach so that they can choose the right concepts to support each proof or work out each solution. I also review Algebra 1 concepts as needed to understand the current topic.

I’m a professional member of the National Tutoring Association, which requires members to adhere to its Code of Ethics. And I tutor high school (and sometimes middle school) students in all sections of both the ACT and the SAT. The ISEE format is very similar to the old SAT format, so the skills that I have taught students for SAT preparation are the same skills that I teach students taking the upper level ISEE. (I currently tutor only the upper level exam.)

I also tutor high school and college students in algebra and geometry topics, so I can go in depth on the ISEE Quantitative and Math Calculation sections as needed to help a student relearn fundamentals or brush up on a formula or concept.

Many high school students graduate from middle school lacking key prealgebra skills. This knowledge gap can cause problems when trying to learn algebra and geometry. Prealgebra also represents about 20-25% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. I tutor pure prealgebra sessions but also work prealgebra topics into tutoring sessions for ACT prep, SAT prep, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry as needed.

SAT Math problems focus on testing both analytical skills and math knowledge. For this reason, it’s important to know how to quickly reason out a plan for solving an SAT Math problem. I help students identify strategies and work through problems to develop this skill. Having a solid grasp on math fundamentals is also critical, so I review Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry topics during my SAT Math tutoring sessions as needed.

The SAT Reading section requires strong reading comprehension skills. Answering big-picture “main idea” questions can often be overwhelming for slower readers. Fast readers, however, may gloss over important context clues, leading them to choose the wrong answers. My SAT Reading sessions include practice to help students improve their comprehension skills under time pressure.

Many people – adults as well as high school students – are confused by the difference between everyday casual English and proper grammar. For example, “I have better grades than she” probably isn’t what you would say to a friend, but this might be a correct answer choice for an SAT Writing question! I help students with these tricky English concepts in addition to reviewing basic rules of grammar and sentence/paragraph organization. If a student is taking the optional Essay portion, I also include SAT essay practice as part of the sessions.
