About Laura

I’m Laura, and I work with students in grades 8 through 12, college students, and adults in the workforce. I have worked for three tutoring companies and have also taught students through independent tutoring requests. I’m a professional member of the National Tutoring Association, which requires members to adhere to its Code of Ethics.

I help students with Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, ACT prep, SAT prep and writing skills. I’ve seen that these math, English and writing foundations are essential to lifelong academic and professional success!

What is it like to work with me? Rather than just teaching you how to solve a problem, I can explain the “why” behind the concept. This will help you think critically about an assignment so you can apply the concept in future learning. I often ask questions to check your understanding and help you think through the material.

For academic sessions, I try to identify knowledge gaps and then fill in these gaps with the fundamentals as we work through your current assignments. For test prep sessions, I focus on reviewing key concepts and testing strategies in the weakest testing area while also practicing skills in your areas of strength to help you gain confidence in taking the test.

I offer session lengths of one hour or longer. Sessions of two hours are suggested for ACT and SAT prep because we’ll be preparing in three different ways: reviewing subject matter, learning test strategies, and practicing the test. Two-hour sessions are also helpful for catching up in a class or reviewing for an exam.

If you are…

A student looking for an extra edge in your classes, or...

A junior or senior prepping for the ACT or SAT, or...

An adult seeking to express yourself more clearly in the workplace, then...

Email me, and let’s get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT English questions test proper word usage, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, organization, style, and writing strategy. In my tutoring sessions, I have each student review and practice these concepts. If a student is taking the ACT Writing section, I include ACT essay practice as well.

ACT Math

ACT Math problems test reasoning skills as well as math knowledge. It can be difficult for students to finish this section in time, particularly if they’ve forgotten some math fundamentals. My ACT Math sessions cover test-taking strategies, test practice, and review of Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry and basic trigonometry topics as needed.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading questions range from finding specific facts to making inferences from the text. While it’s important to read these passages and questions carefully, slower readers may have trouble finishing in time. On the other hand, fast readers may misread questions or paragraphs to arrive at the wrong answers. My tutoring sessions include an evaluation of different approaches to find the one that works best for each student. I also include practice to help students improve their ACT Reading skills under time pressure.

ACT Science

ACT Science questions test a student’s reasoning skills and understanding of the scientific method. Though this section doesn’t focus on specific science knowledge, the sheer volume of data can overwhelm a student under time pressure. I help students identify the way to approach each type of passage so they don’t get stuck in “analysis paralysis”.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is crucial to success in Geometry and Algebra 2. Algebra 1 also represents about 15-20% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. In my Algebra 1 sessions, I review current class notes and assignments with the student, explaining any difficult concepts or problem types. The student then practices additional problems as I check his/her understanding.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a key foundation for advanced math courses in high school and college. Algebra 2 also represents about 15-20% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. In my Algebra 2 sessions, I review current class notes and assignments with the student, explaining any difficult concepts or problem types. I also review Algebra 1 and Geometry topics as needed. The student then practices additional problems as I check his/her understanding.

Geometry

Geometry requires learning a large set of theorems, postulates, corollaries, symbols and formulae. Students must understand which of these concepts to apply to any given problem. In my sessions, I help students think through the problem-solving approach so that they can choose the right concepts to support each proof or work out each solution. I also review Algebra 1 concepts as needed to understand the current topic.

Prealgebra

Many high school students graduate from middle school lacking key prealgebra skills. This knowledge gap can cause problems when trying to learn algebra and geometry. Prealgebra also represents about 20-25% of ACT and SAT Math questions, so mastering this subject can help students do their best on these tests. I tutor pure prealgebra sessions but also work prealgebra topics into tutoring sessions for ACT prep, SAT prep, Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry as needed.

SAT Math

SAT Math problems focus on testing both analytical skills and math knowledge. For this reason, it’s important to know how to quickly reason out a plan for solving an SAT Math problem. I help students identify strategies and work through problems to develop this skill. Having a solid grasp on math fundamentals is also critical, so I review Prealgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry topics during my SAT Math tutoring sessions as needed.

SAT Reading

The SAT Critical Reading section requires strong vocabulary skills, particularly for the sentence completion portion. I include vocabulary lessons and sentence completion practice in my tutoring sessions to help students gain confidence in answering vocabulary-related questions.

Reading comprehension skills are also critical to doing well on this section. Answering big-picture “main idea” questions can often be overwhelming for slower readers. Fast readers, however, may gloss over important context clues, leading them to choose the wrong answers. My SAT Critical Reading sessions include practice to help students improve their comprehension skills under time pressure.

SAT Writing

Many people – adults as well as high school students – are confused by the difference between everyday casual English and proper grammar. For example, “I have better grades than she” probably isn’t what you would say to a friend, but this might be a correct answer choice for an SAT Writing question! I help students with these tricky English concepts in addition to reviewing basic rules of grammar and sentence/paragraph organization. I also include SAT essay practice as part of the sessions.
