I received my master's degree (with distinction) in Education from Hofstra University in 2005. I am a licensed elementary teacher, life/career coach and mentor. I write and critique children's books, and teach chess and piano. I am originally from NYC and now live in East Tennessee. Highlights: I’ve taught piano since 2003, and use several methods including Piano Adventures. Beginner or experienced, we'll meet at your level and move forward. I have a certificate in Chess Education from the University of Texas at Dallas. I've included chess in my classroom since 2007. I've increased students' chess strength for tournaments and personal enjoyment. Online piano and chess lessons are fun and rewarding. These topics provide enrichment for home-schooled students.
College students: Let me help you navigate through your curriculum to fulfill Blackboard assignments from your professors' syllabi. I've supported students in subjects including general music, history, health, and psychology. I also offer study support for state exams that are required for your elementary teaching license, such as Praxis exams. I am a state mentor for college students with TnAchieves/TN Promise.
Before teaching, I was an advertising manager who managed staffing needs, including all hiring. I can offer you resume/cover letter assistance, mock interviews using common behavioral questions, and provide strategic feedback. I'm available to help you prioritize and set/reach goals.
I studied with Columbia University's Reading and Writing Project for a decade, and write and critique children's books (picture books through young adult) and offer editing/writing critiques for your manuscripts and works in progress. I am an active member of SCBWI.
I work with the physically/learning disabled to the gifted, young adults, retirees, new writers/students, and any combination thereof. Lessons are geared to what YOU need.
Let me support your specific goals and enhance your love of learning.

Career Development,

Career Development

My upbeat career/personal coaching will help you construct attainable goals and reach them through an individualized game plan. My specialties include working with job/career changers, individuals looking to reinvent their lives, and individuals returning to school. Sometimes you just need a neutral individual to be your sounding board and to help you sort out your thoughts -- I can be that person. Before changing my own profession to education, I was an advertising manager in NYC, where for over ten years I interviewed and hired the best-qualified candidates after sorting through hundreds of resumes and cover letters. In addition to coaching you, I offer mock interviews using behavioral questions as may be posed by a recruiter or HR/interviewer and will provide you with immediate feedback on how you can improve your answers and presentation. I am a licensed educator, certified life coach (CTA), and hold certificates in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Massachusetts General Hospital) and Mentoring (New Teacher Center). Let's schedule our first meeting where we will immediately start to assess the quality of your cover letters, resumes, interviewing strengths/challenges, identify the right career path (if you are looking for a change), sort out your thoughts, plan a return to school (if desired), and identify goals and next steps. I look forward to hearing from you!

Public Speaking

"Only the prepared speaker deserves to be confident." (Dale Carnegie). Using the Toastmasters public speaking model, I will help you prepare the structure, content, and tone of your academic essays, and your business and public presentations. Let me help you connect with your audience, hold their attention, and present a takeaway reminding them of your central message. Since 2007, I have organized weekly Toastmaster meetings with students and have coached adults to create and improve upon their speeches and writing. Tony Robbins said, "It's what you practice in private that you will be rewarded for in public." Through our private tutoring sessions, you will be ready for your public. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Desktop Publishing

As a writer, I'm here to help you proofread, clarify your writing, and offer many different kinds of editing services for your works in progress and your query letters. I can direct you on how to finish your book, self-publish and upload it. For over fifteen years, I managed an international electronic publishing department in New York where I produced catalogs, brochures, and advertisements from conception to published pieces. I was responsible for the accuracy of all the official tourism publications for New York City. I grew up on Pagemaker, Illustrator, Quark Express, Adobe Photoshop, and graduated to much more. I look forward to helping you reach your publishing goals!

As an experienced proofreader/editor/critiquer/writer of children's books and an active member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators), I can prepare your works in progress and your queries for submission to agents and/or publishers. If you wish to self-publish, I can take you through that process as well. I offer you a variety of options, including a general summary of what you need to work on based on a sample (only a one-hour minimum!), substantive editing (organization and presentation), copy editing (adding a professional polish), and developmental editing (critiquing and guiding the big picture of your written work). Picture books, chapter books, middle grade, and young adult are my primary genres. I have two literacy certificates from Columbia, an Ivy League university, where I was part of a decade-long workshop project studying the art of reading and writing for children. Beginner writers are welcome. I look forward to supporting your masterpieces in progress!

I have enthusiastically taught private piano lessons professionally since 2003. Having taken many years of lessons from a concert pianist, I hold a concentration in music and served as a pianist for a church orchestra, played with and organized a praise team for ten years, and was a part of a Christian band who recorded two CDs. Piano lessons online are FUN and engaging and as you will see, provide opportunities at our fingertips that in-person lessons just don't allow. The beauty of Wyzant is no matter where you are located, you can have a certified and top-notch teacher working with you or your children in your own home, offering the latest technology, with no disruption or transportation necessary. I am a certified elementary teacher who loves teaching the playing and reading of music, theory, technique, and performance. My music curriculum is usually the Faber and Faber method, but I will adapt to a student's individual needs and goals. During our first lesson, we will talk about your goals, make a game plan that will work for you, easily figure out how to best position your phone or computer/webcam, decide what materials will best suit you, and start to learn immediately. And, as one of my students, at no extra cost, you will have 24/7 access to practice your chess in a kid-safe zone as one of my dozens of chess students.
Common Core,

Common Core

Since common core's implementation, I have successfully instructed elementary school students in common core classwork, homework, and for exams in ELA and Mathematics. Last year, my students made two year's growth based on state testing results. I use curriculum and test prep based on common core standards. For example, I have delivered instruction using Envision Math, Eureka Math, GenReady, and currently EL Education and Engage NY.

When I moved from NYC to a different state, although I had taught for ten years, I was still required to take three Praxis Exams to secure my new permanent teaching license. I prepared myself and passed with an above-average score on all three Praxis exams the first time I took them. Knowledgeable, patient and creative tutor

Made terrific progress for a first lesson! Victoria had a solid grasp of chess and some resources for me to work on in between lessons. Looking forward to our next lesson.

So helpful

I enjoyed my lesson with Victoria immensely. She was able to give me, a complete novice, the confidence to continue singing. She helped me identify my range (alto) and she taught me the basics of pitch and key. She researched tools to assist me on this journey and sent them over after our lesson was complete. I am excited to continue working with her!

She was very nice and knew she wanted to not just do her job but also make it clear that she actually is here to help and wants to see you succeed. She is great

professional and well prepared piano teacher

Victoria was able to pick up right where my son’s last piano teacher left off. She was familiar with all his music curriculum and she helped him make immediate progress. My son enjoys his online lessons with Victoria!

Most Valuable Tutor

I usually don't do reviews but Victoria is worth the few minutes takes to write a review. Victoria and I have worked on several subjects such as music history as well as several writing assignments that had to do with science fiction. What I like about Victoria's tutoring style the most is that she adapts to the student's needs. If there is something that she cannot do she will come right out and tell you (this has only happened once in the few years I have been working with her). She is by far one of my favorite tutors and I will hands down recommend her.
