I have retired from decades in industry and am looking to do what I enjoy. I have been told many times that I should go into teaching because I have the ability to explain things in practical terms. I explain concepts to people, not just give them facts. If someone knows the concepts, then they can deduce the facts. I have been a "guest lecturer" at my daughter's high school and demonstrated the real world application of mathematics and physics and have fabricated table top devices which demonstrate such things as Galeleo's principles.
From my years of engineering experience and product development I can give concrete examples of the application of subjects with which students are struggling. Seeing a real world example of a subject often allows the student to develop an understanding, and sometimes even better, an interest in the subject. When I was teaching labs at Vanderbilt as a graduate student I discovered that several of my students changed their major because of the interest they developed in my lab, that was an immensely satisfying experience.
In my opinion mathematics and physics are extremely simple or they wouldn't work at all. Facilitating a student's realization of this concept is my goal and being present when the "light comes on" is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. I have been using AutoCAD professionally for over 25 years. I was the AutoCAD demonstrator for an AutoCAD dealer in Brentwood. I have created over 2000 detail and assembly drawings for industry and the military. I use ANSI standards and because I own a machine shop I know the method of giving enhanced dimensions for the shop floor. I draw everything like I would want it if I had to make the part myself. I teach profecientcy in using the 10% of the commands which are used 90% of the time and how to use the built-in capabilities of the software to determine geometry when reverse engineering is required to produce an obsolete part.
I have 25 years ownership of company involved in machining and fabrication of tooling snd special machines. I designed and built the suspension systems for five different experimental aircraft. I own and operate both manaul and CNC milling machines. I have been an engineering manager, a director of manufacturing and engineering, an R&D Engineer, and a manufacturing engineer. I have real-world knowledge of engineering.
