About Stephanie

Hello, All!

My name is Stephanie and if you need help with English, Grammar, Phonics, Reading, or Writing, I would love to help!

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English and have been the go-to person for several of my friends who have needed help writing their papers. In high school, I was the oldest student in a K-12 school and often helped the younger children with homework. My mother was a teacher and the head of a few schools, so I have been exposed to several methods of teaching throughout my life and have learned from her, as well as the other teachers, what methods really work.

I am very comfortable with students who are 2nd grade and up. I find that those children around the 2nd-6th grade levels are very good at memorizing. This can actually work in their favor a great deal and help them down the road in their construction of sentences and, on the larger scale, essays. As far as vocabulary, I may incorporate some Latin vocabulary found at the root of many of the words in our English language. Overall, my approach will change depending on the student, but I will do whatever it takes to be clear and helpful and give my students that "Aha!" moment they need!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Stephanie

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is one of the greatest fears of the majority of people. Step into any college speaking class or a middle school classroom before a presentation and you can almost smell the fear. With enough practice and training, public speaking doesn't have to be terrifying and traumatizing!

Throughout my years in high school, I participated in a Toastmasters International club. During my sophomore and junior years, I acted as president of my school's Toastmasters club. We had weekly meetings that required every person to speak. Not only did we have to speak publicly, we had to avoid "pause-fillers" ("uh," "um," "so,") and learn to actually communicate effectively.

In college I had to give a presentation every week, whether it involved presenting something I had written myself or presenting a poem in a manner that the audience would find interesting. Part of rhetoric is knowing that your audience will always be predisposed either for or against you, or neutral. The public speaker should know his or her audience and adjust his presentation accordingly in order to be as persuasive and effective as possible.

Public speaking skills are so necessary and will always be used whether on a big scale or a smaller, more personal scale. It shouldn't be scary, and my goal is to help students realize that it can actually be fun!
