It goes without saying that I enjoy working with students. I teach because I love to see a person grow. There is no greater feeling than seeing an "a-ha" moment when a student finally grasps a concept because of your instruction. I have been a teacher for 6 years now, and I love every minute of it.

I began my career as a 7th grade special education teacher where my main areas of instruction were reading and science. I also was a co-teacher alongside a math and social studies teacher. From there I became a math interventionist for 6th graders and also co-taught in the math setting. I am now currently a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade special education teacher. My primary instruction is directed towards reading and ELA, but I also teach math and job skills.

Overall, I would really enjoy the opportunity to work with your students. I believe that teachers can learn from students as well as the other way around. Since I do currently teach, my availability is mostly after school, and most weekends. I look forward to hearing from you.

Phonics,

Phonics

I am currently in my third year of school at Elmhurst College studying special education. In order to be become a fluent reader and comprehend text, phonics is one of the main skills needed to do that. I have used many strategies with students that relate to building words, looking at word families, teaching multisyllabic decoding strategies, and letter-sound correspondence. I have used traditional ways (word families, word building) and spelling strategies to teach phonics skills.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

When it comes to this particular area of students, I have had great experience using different behavior strategies to focus a learner. Rather than motivate students extrinsically, I have used methods such as schedule reminders and finger prompts to make sure students with ADD/ADHD are actively engaged during the lesson. I am currently in my third year of school at Elmhurst College studying special education.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism spectrum disorders are an area in which I have had a great deal of experience. I have worked one-on-one with students as well as small group instruction. Using prompting strategies and explicit instruction, I have been able to help teach students with exceptionalities the basic skills they need to know. I am currently in college studying special education.

Dyslexia

I am taking literacy classes that give explicit strategies to teach students with dyslexia in order to improve reading. I have different activities starting from the basics (phonemic awareness, phonics) to the ending goal (fluency, comprehension).
