With an undergraduate degree in education and over 35 years of classroom experience in diverse environmental and geographical settings coupled with an appreciation of and facility in the classical model of education, I desire to assist students in the learning process. I will maximize their time and energy expended by enabling their success through the identification of their particular learning style, assisting them to recognize strengths and weaknesses that contribute toward their learning, and provide them with the necessary tools for ongoing learning consistent with the unique way in which they learn.
Because communication is critical to learning, I will concentrate upon helping the student in all the elements of communication skills: reading, speaking, listening, writing, and critical thinking. Students find this especially helpful for successful engagement with tests, exams, and qualifiers. In my tutorial approach, I want to help parents and educators in the shaping of a student for lifelong learning. Consequently, my approach leans more toward mentoring students. I especially welcome students who struggle with learning in the traditional classroom approach or who may have encountered some learning challenges. Anyone can learn and have great satisfaction and personal fulfillment in doing so.

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree included a minor in communications with an emphasis upon public speaking. My 40+ year career has required considerable involvement in both the classroom and the public arena where it was necessary to engage both small groups and larger audiences in speaking. Furthermore, I have taught speech/public speaking on both the secondary and collegiate levels. I continue to be engaged as a public speaker.

Study Skills

My 40+ year career has engaged students in elementary, secondary, collegiate and post-collegiate education. Observing firsthand how poor study skills can hamper learning--both the joy and the progress--I have sought out and received additional training in identifying poor habits/skills and providing appropriate remedial training. The goal is always to help students remove the considerable roadblock that poor study skills present, breaking down the walls of frustration and poor self-image, and showing them that not only can they learn, but they can do so with great delight. It is important to note here, however, that crucial to the task of helping students to develop better study skills the tutor/mentor must first carefully identify those learned behaviors/habits that the student has already established, behaviors/habits that are preventing learning.

I am proficient in teaching both the language of English as well as the necessary mechanics (i.e. grammar, punctuation, written, spoken, etc.).
