About Brandi

I taught Microbiology and Introductory Biology labs for one year at The University of TN at Martin. During this time, I constructed all lesson plans and quizzes, and I gave students outside help as needed with both lecture and lab questions. I have also often been designated as the leader of my study groups in college and high school because my teaching style breaks down important information into manageable chunks. I primarily use verbal teaching methods and whiteboard information and illustrations to explain complex material. However, I am adaptable to other methods and learning styles.
My degree was a double major in Cell and Molecular Biology and in Chemistry. I completed this double major in the standard four-year period. I also have done some graduate coursework in Biology- Medical Science. Therefore, I have taken courses such as Histology, Gross Anatomy, and Medical Physiology. I also have 2 years of experience with taking the MCAT exam and have developed some effective study methods for this exam. In addition, my marks in the humanities have also been high, and I enjoy tutoring subjects outside my major, particularly English, public speaking, and writing.
I am open to tutoring all age levels, but my primary age group is high school to college age students.
I will be pursuing a PhD next fall, so I am open to helping graduate students if needed. My background is again, primarily biological sciences, chemistry, and medical science, but I am not opposed to taking on students of other majors.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

MCAT

I have taken the MCAT exam twice. Because of this, I learned how to study well for it and was able to significantly improve my score from the first time to the second time. I also went through several courses that are taught at UMMC medical school, including histology, medical physiology, biochemistry, and others. I believe this gives me sufficient background to be able to tutor students who are taking the MCAT.

Oboe

I have played the oboe for over 10 years. I participated in band from grades 6 through 10 and continued to play solo at events at my church even after that. I sat first chair at each regional event in which I competed, and I had several solos during my concert band seasons, even as a freshman and sophomore.

Organic Chemistry

I have a BS in Chemistry and am currently pursuing a PhD in Biotechnology. I have taken 2 courses of organic chemistry, as well as biochemistry (which builds on organic). My research background makes me an excellent candidate for tutoring this subject, as many of the techniques we learned in the course, I have employed in a laboratory setting.

Excellent with a broad base of knowledge.

Brandi is tutoring my son in College Chem 2. He is a very bright student that could not grasp chemistry. She has been patient and an excellent tutor. His whole attitude toward college has been renewed. She has also given him tips in Calculus when he hits rough spots. My son can not say enough positive about this tutor. I am so glad we chose her.
