Currently retired after 31 years as a classroom teacher, I possess a Masters + 30 in secondary English Education. In addition, I am certified to teach social studies/history, gifted education, speech arts, and theatre arts. A native of Alabama, my last 25 years in teaching was spent with Fairfax County (VA) Schools, the tenth- largest school system in America, for which I also served as an oral and written communications specialist and, among other honors, received the Outstanding Teacher Award. Fairfax County's teachers number approximately 10,000.
Twenty years ago, I originated a consumer advocacy consulting business. This led to corporate publishing of two consumer books and to many national television appearances, including "Oprah," "Good Morning, America," "Today," "48 Hours," and others. Moreover, I was (and continue to be) featured in American newspapers, magazines, and on radio; I write a consumer advice column for my city's newspaper. Throughout, I continue to tutor and edit, even following retirement in 2007.
My educational philosophy is simple: A child of any age can learn and become successful and productive. Most tasks are well worth the effort, because the student gains a certain comprehension and the skills necessary to transfer that knowledge to other learning experiences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent 34 years teaching secondary through post-college degree English, grammar, and mechanics. I possess a BS undergraduate degree; plus, both my graduate degree and Post-Masters work are in the field of English. Not only did I also tutor outside of the classroom, and continue to do so following retirement, my students accomplish their goals of entering college and/or other areas of expertise.
I have been teaching American and European lit for more than three decades. Fascinating subject matter!
I taught public speaking for over 30 years to be utilized in an informal setting, as well as on a competitive level to both school-age students and to professionals. This course is one of the most important, in my opinion, as it teaches communication expertise, positive self esteem, and relationship building. I currently lead seminars and presentations for a national military charity, as well as for consumer issues that are based upon my expertise in this arena. Additionally, I am a professional storyteller and use public speaking skills to present to audiences of all ages.
One of my undergraduate degrees is Public Speaking/forensics, which I taught for many years from 7th grade through college. Learning to speak before an audience - large or small - builds a positive level of self-confidence; in fact, this process is one that strengthens other areas of communication that spill over into all life skills.
When learned correctly and practiced on a daily basis, study skills are perhaps the most important facet in education. Whether taking notes in a logical order to learning how to eliminate answers on a multiple choice test, students who learn basic study skills can only make their educational experience easier.
As a long-time English teacher, I taught and reinforced study skills each day. Practice makes perfect! Additionally, I actually taught a study skills elective for my middle school students. Quite a few of seventh and eighth-graders were remedial learners and really gained new and positive methods for studying and excelling. Pre-K youngsters should begin to learn some of these skills; certainly, by the time kids roll around to sixth-grade and beyond, study skills become more of a necessity. Frankly, I don't believe anyone can successfully teach without incorporating study skills into the lessons.
I directed 2-4 full length productions per year. Many of my students won dramatic awards in both Alabama and the Metro D.C. areas. Several continued into adulthood with professional arenas, such as off-broadway directors television commercials.
From the War of the Roses to the rise of the Tudor Dynasty, European history is one of my favorite subjects. The Dark Ages, the French Revolution, and everything in between makes this topic adventure-filled and fascinating.
