About John

I am a professional chemist with a Master's in Organic Chemistry. I have tutored students at various education levels, ranging from middle school to college. While in college, I served as both a laboratory teaching assistant (TA) and a supplemental instruction (SI) facilitator. As a graduate student, I continued teaching as a private tutor for organic chemistry students.

I specialize in tutoring chemistry for high school and college students. I am also highly skilled in algebra and use it daily in my career.

I love to watch my students succeed and will work my hardest to ensure they thoroughly understand a subject before moving on. I can effectively adapt my teaching to work with various learning styles and often utilize a problem-based approach to determine a student's difficulties.

I am available to tutor weekday evenings from 6PM to 9PM. I can also be available on Saturdays from 10AM to 4PM and 7PM to 9PM if an appointment is made at least a week in advance. I prefer tutoring in person, as that makes it easiest to determine what a person struggles with. My base rate is $45/hour and I can offer discounts for group sessions. Message me for details.

I use algebra on a daily basis in my job and can effectively explain the concepts and demonstrate their use in practical applications.

I have an advanced degree in chemistry and have previously tutored chemistry at multiple levels. My students have historically been more successful in their classes in relation to their peers. I have experience in synthetic organic chemistry and analytical chemistry and can demonstrate application of chemistry concepts.

Please contact me if you are interested in scheduling lessons. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I received my Master's degree from Vanderbilt University in Organic Chemistry. I have conducted research in synthetic organic chemistry. While in graduate school, I tutored college students in organic chemistry courses and graded exams for those courses. I consistently received the highest score on my organic chemistry exams in college and several of my peers requested my assistance in studying.
