About Michael

My education and tutoring specialty is mostly geared towards Spanish and ESL-English, of which I have several years experience in teaching. That being said, I have an enthusiasm for and further experience in teaching many subjects, including all History/Social Studies courses, basic Sciences, Psychology, Grammar/Literature, and essentially any subject that falls under the umbrella of humanities or liberal arts, from Pre-K and up!

I enjoy helping students of any level with their reading and writing abilities, and am always eager to improve these skills and foster a love of these two areas in children.

Another major area of expertise is music, and I would love to help improve the student's level of music theory, choir singing, or guitar/bass guitar playing. I have several years experience in teaching guitar, and intermittent experience teaching theory and choir music.

Having tutored students over the past few years, I can truly see its benefits with my own eyes. Individualized help and attention in select areas goes a very long way when students may not be getting this in the classroom. I strive to get them this attention not only to help bring up grades and enhance understanding, but to create or help along a desire to learn, which I belive goes a very, very long way in their lives.

After graduating college, I spent two years in Madrid, Spain teaching English to Spanish children. I worked both in a Spanish bilingual school and tutored individuals and small groups of students after school, whose ages ranged from preschool to high school, and skill levels from absolute beginners to high level conversation. I am comfortable and proficient in teaching all facets of ESL, including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and speaking. I also enjoy helping native English speakers with their reading and writing skills.

Earned a Spanish minor from the University of Illinois (alongside a Global Studies major), and I have always been heavily invested in learning Spanish both inside and outside of the classroom. I studied abroad in Granada, Spain for a semester during my junior year of college in a full-immersion environment, taking classes completely in Spanish, as well as living with a host family who spoke no English. After graduating college, as I've outlined above, I lived in Madrid, Spain for two years. Those two years solidified my fluency in the language, and ironically, through teaching English to Spanish students, solidified my understanding and ability to teach the language. After returning to the U.S., I taught Spanish in a PreK - 8 school as a fill-in for one semester, which I really enjoyed.

My schedule still has some availability, so please feel free to contact me and we can further discuss a tutoring arrangement! Looking forward to meeting new students!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

Self-taught (with the help of some excellent people along the way) cooking enthusiast who has been at it and enthralled with the workings of the kitchen since childhood. Over the years I've developed some great knowledge and skill, and it's one of my favorite things to do. As a reader of many a cookbook and watcher of many a cooking video, I gotten to know my way around food and how to prepare it pretty well, delving into not only cooking technique, but nutrition as well. I would love to show others how to become better cooks, as I believe it is one of the most valuable and practical skills one can possess!

General Music

I have been a musician for over fifteen years, and in that time I have taken college music theory courses, sung in selective choir groups, and learned to play many instruments such as acoustic and electric guitar, piano, bass guitar, drums, ukulele, a more. Not only have I studied it in a scholastic sense, but it continues to be my premier dedication of continuous learning and practicing, and I would love to help others to understand and experience this joy and passion.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for fifteen years now, and know my way around the instrument pretty well! More importantly, I have taught several students guitar lessons over the course of several years. I really enjoy doing it and passing on the love for the instrument.

Spanish

After graduating, I moved to Spain and lived there for two years, teaching in a bilingual Spanish/English elementary school, and did several hours of tutoring after school every week. That experience thoroughly solidified my knowledge of the language, and through teaching English to Spanish speakers, I was able to gain a unique and in depth perspective on how to teach Spanish! Upon returning to the U.S., I took a role as the Spanish teacher at a private elementary school for one semester. I earned a Spanish Minor in college, which included studying abroad in Spain in a complete immersion program for one semester. I also tutored fellow students in Spanish during my time in college.
