About Kate

My ability and passion to teach have been apparent from a young age. Since then, I have actively pursued ways to use this skill in many ways, whether teaching my peers, older crowds, or younger crowds. Having a strong science background allows me to know the science subject matter in a fundamental way that enables me to teach students who come from all levels in a way that makes sense to them.

I have been awarded the Scientist in the Classroom Fellowship in recognition of my thorough understanding of science and ability to simplify complex topics. As a fellow, I have been challenged to present my scientific background in a manner understandable to K-5th graders. My creativity and ingenuity have flourished as I have reached beyond standard textbook activities and developed and implemented my own classroom experiments that challenged the students to think about science in new ways. My enthusiasm and energy as a scientist and a leader have inspired many of the students to pursue science and become expert problem solvers in the process.

As a Master’s student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Vanderbilt University, I have engaged in research at the forefront of my field and actively pursued opportunities to deepen my understanding. My excellence in research has been recognized by receiving project funding through the NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship. Having experienced the setbacks of the research process, I can offer you a fine-tuned set of problem-solving skills and strong critical thinking required in today’s busy classrooms.

I have always been passionate about science and teaching. I decided to pursue physics and astronomy as my field of study in undergraduate and graduate colleges and while completing these degrees I taught and tutored for the department in physics, math, and astronomy. All of my tutored students went on to receive a test grade at least one letter grade higher than their previous grade. I have also almost completed a teaching certification program in physics and middle school sciences.

As a past homeschooler myself, I am able to uniquely understand the challenges and advantages to homeschooling. While in high school at a home studies center I tutored younger students as well as peers in subjects such as math, science, and oceanography. I am able to work with the flexibility that homeschoolers have.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am willing to charge a lower rate for an online tutoring session or for group tutoring sessions. I would love to help you understand the way the world around us speaks through physics and math. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Project Management

I took project management in graduate school and I passed the CAPM which is one level below the PMP. The only reason I could not obtain a PMP is due to the requirement of 3 non-consecutive year long projects completely managed by yourself. I have done several smaller projects where I was lead, but never anything that long. I have studied extensively for Project management and have a good system to help someone memorize the 47 processes.

Very passionate and easy to understand — Kate did a great job at explaining the concepts which didn't really make sense to me beforehand. She really seems to enjoy what she's teaching and was very organized. Definitely recommend her as a tutor! ...
