About Alistair

I am passionate about literacy, and have acquired a depth of understanding for literacy theory and practice. I have a heart for fostering the love of reading with our youngest students and building capacity in elementary school literacy programs.

Currently, I am in the Reading Education M.Ed program at Vanderbilt University. I plan to graduate December 2016 and then continue to pursue a career as a literacy specialist. My passion for literacy flourishes with young learners, as I received my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of South Carolina. I have worked with MNPS schools in a variety of roles as a reading interventionist leading Guided Reading groups K-4, worked alongside a literacy coach to plan and implement curriculum in K-1 classrooms, provide professional development experiences for teachers, and facilitate balanced literacy in summer programs for EL students. I have a heart for non-profit literacy organizations and interned with the ReadbabyRead program last summer, a facet of Hillsong Africa Foundation in South Africa. I have tutored a range of diverse learners and have worked both in schools and at the Vanderbilt Reading Clinic to administer diagnostic assessments and develop individualized intervention plans tailored to students needs. I have experience with a wide range of cultural backgrounds and with varied abilities, including gifted children and children with learning disabilities.

I am eager to meet student's interests and create individualized lessons tailored leveraging the student's strengths to promote opportunities for growth. I love to incorporate multi-sensory and engaging activities to facilitate sessions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
