About Melody

I have worked with ESL students in a variety of settings and countries since 1991. In 2010, I earned my Masters in Teaching English Language Learners and became a licensed teacher and have taught in public and private schools in Nashville, TN. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to get to know a student one-on-one which helps me tailor my instruction to better support each student's individual needs.

High school students may need to work on intense vocabulary development to prepare for the ACT/SAT/TOEFL exams or writing essays for college applications. College students benefit from sessions that focus on learning how to navigate their new English environment, instructors, coursework, and roommates. Post-College graduates need support as they transition into the business world and need to create resumes, cover letters, and prepare for interviews. Each of these stages comes with a different set of challenges (and vocabulary words!) for an ESL student. My goal is to help each of my students increase their English proficiency levels as well as gain the confidence they need to succeed.

I offer a free 30-minute initial assessment session that will allow me to learn more about you and your English proficiency goals.

I specialize in Vocabulary Development, Conversational English, and Test-Taking Skills (ACT/SAT/TOEFL). I have found that many ESL students have a very formal, or academic, understanding of the English language and just need help adapting their knowledge into everyday language use in classes, with roommates, or speaking to a potential boss. Does that sound familiar?

I generally schedule sessions Monday - Friday between 9am-1am and I can travel to meet with local students or online via Skype. My base rate is $90/hour for in-person lessons and $45/hour for online lessons.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Preparing for the ACT test is stressful for English speaking students. But, for an ESL student, it can become a barrier to getting into the college of their choice. By scheduling regular sessions well in advance of the test date to focus on vocabulary development, learning to recognize context clues in the questions, and grammar practice students can expect to see an increase their ACT English test score.

ACT Reading

I will work extensively with students on vocabulary development and identification of context clues in the questions as well as the reading passages. We will also complete practice tests and learn to manage time and anxiety before and during the test. This will help prepare students to succeed when they take the ACT Reading exam.

English

As a native English speaker, I sometimes forget how bizarre our language rules can be! But it is essential to learn proper grammar, proper use of homonyms, spelling, and grammar, verb tenses, and sentence structure. Even though I specialize in teaching ESL students, I see an increasing need for native English speakers to pay attention to the details of using English properly so you represent yourself to the best of your abilities on college essays and job applications.

ESL/ESOL

I have a M.A. in Teaching English Learners from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. I have an active teaching license in the state of Tennessee and am certified (and highly qualified) to teach k-12 in our public school system. I have five years of classroom experience teaching ESL students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I began working with ESL students in 1991 when I taught English in El Salvador. I have also worked with college graduates preparing for job placement.

Homeschool

I am a licenced teacher in the state of Tennessee. I have an undergraduate degree in teaching Early Childhood Education (PreK-3) and a Masters degree in Teaching English Language Learners (K-12).

My teaching philosophy is that we learn best through experience. I enjoy working with homeschool students and families because there is more flexibility to create interactive lessons and experiences that are relevant to the student's interests and unit of study. It is challenging to be responsible for your children's education, especially if you have several children at various levels. I enjoy partnering with parents and other instructors to create multi-disciplinary lessons.

I have taught in elementary, middle and high school classrooms, and worked with students individually and in small groups as a tutor. I am also the mother of a 17-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son. I have experienced first hand how hard it can be to be a teacher and try to teach your own children!

Public Speaking

ESL students need LOTS of speaking practice in order to feel confident in their public speaking capabilities. I have created a series of progressive lessons and projects that are designed to increase the student's confidence step-by-step while strengthening their enunciation skills. Utilizing speaking apps that include animation or alteration of their voice helps to decrease their vulnerability and increase their confidence. I have had students create persuasive commercials for a state they had to research and sell and I have helped students prepare, edit, and refine slides for senior and college thesis presentations.

SAT Reading

I will work extensively with students on vocabulary development and identification of context clues in the questions as well as the reading passages. We will also complete practice tests and learn to manage time and anxiety before and during the test. This will help prepare students to succeed when they take the SAT Reading exam.

Study Skills

I have a M.A. in Teaching English Language Learners from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. I taught ESOL to international students at Davidson Academy in Nashville, TN and helped them prepare for their ACT/SAT/TOEFL exams.

The biggest challenge for ESL students is understanding the correct usage of the vocabulary in the context of the directions or the actual question. If you can help them understand and feel confident that they understand WHAT the question is asking their true knowledge can more accurately be assessed. Learning how to pay attention to context clues and how to pace themselves throughout the test can make a HUGE difference in their test scores.

TOEFL

The TOEFL test is very important to students wishing to continue their education in the United States for college or professionally. The speaking and writing sections are generally the most challenging for students. Vocabulary practice is crucial and working through practice tests together helps a student prepare for taking the test. They also benefit from learning to manage their anxiety levels while prepping for this exam.

Vocabulary

Words are wonderful!! One of my favorite parts of being an ESL teacher is teaching vocabulary. It is one thing to memorize words and their meanings. It is quite another to make a connection with how a word can be used to describe a feeling or tell a funny joke! I also actively encourage my students to keep a running list of words or phrases that they don't understand as they come in contact with them throughout their day. I still get texts from past students asking if they are using a word correctly!
