About Tavia

My love for tutoring comes from my love of life- long learning. Having completed my Master's Degree in 2012 with a 3.85 GPA, I understand that hard work and dedication can pay off. I have had the honor of helping students reach their potential, which has been very rewarding.

Watching a student suddenly understand a concept after struggling before is a highlight of my tutoring experience. Most of my tutoring experience is with kids and teenagers between 10 and 16, but have worked with adults in college as well. I have a total of 2 years tutoring before I moved to Nashville and started my Master's Degree program in Public Administration. I am currently working on a Ph.D. in Non-Profit Management and Leadership.

I believe my varied degrees and academic experience and success helps to understand what skills are needed for a student to succeed. My minor in English at MTSU required more than 20 hours in the subject, and I am well versed in not only grammar and language, but reading skills, comprehension methods, and have studied various forms of writing and poetry. My bachelors degree in Political Science has provided me with extensive exposure to the structure of governments, politics, and other aspects of the process here in America and other parts of the world.

One of my main goals in a session is to challenge a student, but not to the point of information overload. I feel I balance that well, and have the ability to connect and understand what my students' needs are. Depending on the subject, I will provide some small homework assignments to keep the information fresh as well as periodic assessments in addition to the feedback from their teachers at school regarding improvement. I usually make the first lesson fairly basic, and depending on the subject and information the teacher may have sent home I may have a quick assessment test to better judge where the student is. I then look at either the parental goals or information from the teacher to decide on the best approach for the situation. I also spend time asking the student questions to better understand how they learn and exactly what they are struggling with, or what area they see they need improvement on. When we meet the next week, I have a general lesson plan I would strive to follow, but adjustments will be made based on the progression of the student. I am very flexible and able to conform to the style of learning that works best for the student, as students tend to learn different ways and one approach will not work for all.

My love of writing is what led me to major in English at Middle TN State University the first two years I was there, and then graduated with a minor in English. I am experienced in helping students learn to comprehend reading more easily, the grammar of English, how to proofread, as well as how to outline and complete a basic research paper. I can cover any subject matter related to English up to and including basic Freshman English at the college level. I have worked with students on test prep skill as well, in both grammar and reading comprehension.

I offer discounts for lesson packages, as well as for online lessons, contact me to learn more. My cancellation policy is up to 2 hours prior to the lesson is acceptable for in- person and 1 hour for online sessions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Political Science from Middle TN State University. I have also tutored this in the past. Within the subject of Political Science I have hands-on experience volunteering for political campaigns as well.
