Tennessee State University (HIstory)
Middle Tennessee State University (Master's)
Hi! My name is Ashley, and I'm a public historian. My career has been devoted to working with the public to understand history, archaeology, and social studies. I have worked privately as a tutor in the past, and have decided to continue that experience here. I attended Volunteer State Community College, Tennessee State University (Bachelor's- History), and Middle Tennessee State University (Master's- Public History).
In my line of historical work, I have given lectures and served as a tour guide at seven different Middle Tennessee museums and historic homes. I work mostly with children between the ages of 4 and 17. I'm an expert on Tennessee history! My areas of focus are African American history, American history, and medical history. Public History is all about working with different audiences to help them understand major events, people, and times. I'm able to help any age understand different aspects of history, geography, religion, and culture!
My approach to history is very hands-on. I like to use costumes and reproduction items to help people understand what history really was like. What better way to understand it than by writing with a quill pen or home-making butter while wearing an 1800s costume? I like to engage people as fully as possible.
History is not just in the books! It's all around us, and it affects our world today. I want to fully immerse my students so that they can feel history around them, through audio, visual, and hands-on methods.
Coursework taken at Middle Tennessee State University and a deep passion for archaeology!
I have spent the last fifteen years working in various museums in Middle Tennessee. In every museum, the largest number of visitors are families with children or school groups. This has enabled me to adapt my teaching methods based on age, needs, and level of understanding. I studied geography and religious history extensively, and in the past have tutored on how the three (history, religion, geography) shaped the world in the past.
If you're in need of an enthusiastic tutor on social studies or history, I'm the one! I'm passionate about what I do and love to spread that joy to others. Please feel free to contact me to set up a session, or with any questions. Thanks! Hi! My name is Ashley, and I'm a public historian. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
-Work experience: 17 years experience in educational departments at local museums
-Educational background: Undergraduate- Vol State Community College, Tennessee State University (Bachelor's Degree, 2012); Middle Tennessee State University (Master's Degree, 2016)
My archaeology experience was gained while enrolled in coursework at Middle Tennessee State University. We worked in a lab processing artifacts and doing digs. In my current position at the Tennessee State Museum, I teach a program specifically on archaeology, stratigraphy, and analyzing artifacts. In this program, I work with children as young as 6 to teach them about archaeology via the early Native Americans (pottery, stratigraphy, etc). We talk about higher level concepts such as TPQs and how to date artifacts.
2 years with the Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE), as well as coaching students of all grade levels with papers.
