About Carlos

I'm what you call a Renaissance man, at least that is what people who know me best say. I've been back to school many times both for graduate education and continuing education. I worked in marketing for many years and led the training of many new hires not only because I liked it, but also because I was good at it. Training is teaching and when you teach you learn, and vice versa. Learning and teaching come together, just like reading and writing do.

My first graduate degree was in International Relations and I studied abroad in Spain and France. Although it was my original intention to join the State Department's Foreign service, I went on to business school and screenwriting school at the graduate and post graduate levels instead. Out of the five times that I have taken the Foreign Service Officer test, I have passed it each and every single time. It's a test that requires broad and deep knowledge of English, History, Government, Economics, Culture, etc. Without a doubt, I am a language person and a history person. Indeed, I have often used my knowledge in these areas on diverse projects from global advertising campaigns to coverage of Hollywood screenplays.

Currently, I'm tutoring transplanted business executives from Brazil, Spain and France in American English and culture. Often, I use resources like music, film, literature and social media to advance their skills. There is no one size fits all in education. I do my best to craft lessons that suit the background, needs and objectives of the learners.

I did my junior year abroad in college in Seville, Spain and worked for a season in Bolivia. I also traveled often for business to Mexico and Argentina. Furthermore, after graduate school, I spent two years in Paris on a scholarship studying at La Sorbonne where I obtained a Diploma in French Language and Civilization.

Although I love languages and linguistics, English is my first and primary language. I have written five screenplays and read and critiqued hundreds of them while studying the art and craft of film and TV at UCLA. Many years working at ad agencies, I was required to write and present impeccable white papers and presentations for clients. There are many skill sets that are important in marketing and advertising, but none as important as good communication skills.

In high school, I received Governor's Honors for History and got to participate in a summer program in this subject area for student scholars. As an undergraduate, I was a political science and economics major, but history was a significant part of the curriculum. My graduate studies in International Relations were interdisciplinary and included history, political philosophy and international economics. The more you study, the more you see the connections among all the subjects.

What I most require from my students is a positive mental attitude. Learning and understanding will come. It will never come as fast as you want, but with tenacity and effort and a positive attitude, you will even surprise yourself when those learning epiphanies occur.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a well trained screenwriter trained at UCLA with five completed screenplays under my belt. I am a researcher and writer at policy institutes in Washington, D.C. and copywriter at ad agencies and presentation developer for clients' needs where immaculate writing was required. I understand fully the importance of understanding the audience for whom you write. I taught English for public high school students at tutoring labs in NYC, Miami and Los Angeles.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Certificate in TEFL/ESL from the Global Language Training institute based in London. It was a rigorous 150+ hour training program that included writing lesson plans and ESL teaching techniques. I have taught ESL at not-for-profit organizations in New York City, Miami and Los Angeles where I helped recent immigrants advance their English language skills.

French

After two years of high school French, plus two years in college, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study abroad for two years of French immersion. In Paris, at the "Cours de Civilisation Fran├žaise de la Sorbonne," I went on to complete a Diploma in French Language and Civilization where my exit exam was well over the 80th percentile. Classes were intense from 8am to noon each weekday with the emphasis on language, literature and phonetics. Since then I have been a member of the Alliance Fran├žaise in several American cities and continue to be an active participant in French social and academic circles and have substitute taught French at various high schools.

Marketing

I went to a top 10 business school where I received honors in marketing and I worked for over a decade at ad agencies creating major integrated marketing campaigns for major national clients, such as New Line Cinema (Sex & The City, Four Christmases, Semi-Pro, The Golden Compass and other movies), ConAgra Packaged Goods (PAM Cooking Spray, La Choy Soy Sauce, Chef Boyardee) and Nissan (Altima, Rogue, Maxima).

Spanish

Native Spanish speaker who while in college did his junior year abroad in Spain and has worked in Latin America mostly for global advertising campaigns.

World History

I was a recipient of Governor's Honors in History, which means that after my junior high school year, I was selected to participate in a six week summer series of history lectures and research at one of the colleges in my home state. Moreover, part of my studies in college, grad school and abroad were world history -- a topic in which I excel.
