About Christine

A recent report released by Harvard University, and signed off on by 50 admissions deans from leading universities recommends that elite universities change their admissions criteria - reducing the emphasis on SAT scores and GPAs, and increasing the emphasis on "ethical behavior" and "intellectual engagement" (http://www.wsj.com/articles/educators-seek-to-ease-pressure-in-college-admissions-process-1453249687). This change in emphasis reflects concerns of the educators at these leading universities who are currently tasked with educating young people who were very well prepared to get into college, but not very well prepared for college itself. I witnessed this myself, as a freshman academic advisor and instructor at Vanderbilt, and I am thrilled to see that academic deans at leading universities are addressing the concerns of their faculty members.

High school, and even middle school, has become fraught with anxiety about taking the "right" classes, being in the "right" activities, and getting the best test scores. Young people rarely have the time and energy to put toward the humanitarian interests and intellectual exploration that fuel a love of learning. Changing admissions requirements can lead to a reduction in college-prep related stress for both students and parents, but only if you are prepared.

That's where I come in. I have a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and neuroscience from Vanderbilt which provides me with an extensive understanding of learning and memory; experience teaching at Vanderbilt which provided me with inside knowledge of the skills required for students to thrive at an elite school; and experience advising freshman students which provided me with insight into the transition from high school to college, from the students' perspective. With my help, your child will not only learn to adjust his or her activities to fit the changing admissions requirements. He or she will gain the confidence and skills necessary for a successful college career.

I had an awesome English teacher, Mrs. Green, when I was in middle school, and I have loved English ever since. I would love to help you or your child with any aspect of English with which you are struggling or in which you would like to become more proficient.

Please email me so that we can discuss how it would be best to address your specific needs.

Thank you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
