In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have years of experience sight-singing and teaching sight-singing techniques in both private lessons and group ensemble sessions. I have successfully completed several sight singing auditions throughout my career, including my audition for the music program at Belmont University, Syracuse University, and in several ensemble auditions, including, All State Chorus, All Shore Chorus, and Groovestand A Capella. I use both the Nashville Number System and solfege in my sight singing instruction.
I studied songwriting at Belmont University under the incredible instruction of Drew Ramsey, James Elliott, and Tom Douglas ("The House That Built Me", "I Run to You", "Meanwhile Back at Mama's", etc.), seasoned songwriters who have had major publishing deals and hit songs on the radio. I frequently write on Music Row with professional songwriters, and recently won first place in the American Songwriter Magazine lyric contest. My songwriting lessons are focused around writing commercial songs that follow a radio format. We focus on developing strong lyrical and melodic hooks, chord structure, song form, and methods of battling "writer's block"!
I have my Bachelor of Music from Belmont University, where I studied commercial and classical voice with an emphasis in songwriting and music business. I currently teach voice lessons at an arts academy, as well as from my own home and in the homes of my private students. We focus on developing a strong sense of pitch and rhythm, an evenness of tone, a powerful chest voice, a smooth transition from mix voice to head voice, and performance skills.
