About Kathryn

I grew up in Nashville and was homeschooled all the way up through the twelfth grade. I attended Pamela White's writing and grammar classes and enjoyed personal tutoring from her during high school. She gave me a deep knowledge and respect for English grammar and taught me the immense importance of a well-written paper -- I wish to do the same for you.

I studied Japanese for four years before traveling to Japan to teach English and Classic Literature at a private school in Chiba, Japan for seven months. While In Japan I gained a greater understanding and command of the language with the help of private tutoring and the effects of immersion, which I believe are essential to mastering any foreign language. In 2015 I returned to Japan for a few months to visit the good friends that I made there during my first trip. I maintain an intermediate speaking and writing level in Japanese.

I spent about five years teaching English and beginner Japanese online, which has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. My main approach to teaching language is to find out what your strengths and weaknesses are (which you may already be aware of), and then I create a curriculum set designed to fit your needs. I like to use a combination of speaking practice using natural conversation and role play, current events reading materials such as newspaper and magazine articles. For the Japanese learner, I will teach you to read and write in tandem with learning to speak conversationally in Japanese. I am always available to answer any questions you have between our lessons and respond quickly via email or text.

I served as a volunteer ESL teacher at Crossroads of the Nations church and Cornerstone Presbyterian, primarily for adult Japanese and Spanish speakers for one year.

Since 2013 I have attended Williamson College in Franklin, TN, earning my bachelors of science in Business Administration and will graduate in May of 2017.

I specialize in ESL, essay writing/grammar, and beginner Japanese. As a former homeschooled child, I have a great passion for helping tutor homeschooled students in the subjects I enjoyed learning most, such as history and language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I grew up in a Christian home where the study of the Bible, particularly the Old Testament, was paramount to every other subject of study. In college I took several courses in Bible study methods under some amazing Christian professors, one of whom was Neil T. Anderson (author of Bondage Breaker and Out of the Darkness). I continue to study the Bible every day.

Drawing

Pencil was my very first artistic medium when I was young and will always be my go-to utensil for most projects. My specialty is realistic portraits of people. Aside from drawing with a simple pencil, I also enjoy using charcoal, which gives loads of contrast and dimension to whatever you create. If you would like to learn my methods for drawing with more structure as well as flare, proper shadowing, distance proportion, faces, and features, then let's get in touch and get drawing!

ESL/ESOL

ESL teacher at Cornerstone Pres. in Franklin, TN; ESL teacher assistant at Crossroads of the Nations church in Cool Springs, TN; English teacher at Covenant Community School International in Chiba, Japan.

Painting

My paint of choice is oil and my favorite thing to paint is Italian scenes and classic architecture, which is very easy on the eyes and would suit just about any wall in any style of home. I took lessons from a great Italian oil painter who showed me how to approach any painting project of any size as well as how to mix colors so that they are true to the original picture or photograph. I would love to teach you what I have learned over the years so that you can decorate your home with beautiful original pieces.

Reading

Taught two of my young siblings to read using Hooked on Phonics.

Gentle and knowledgeable tutor

My daughter loves spending time with Kathryn! I didn't think my 4 y/o would sit still and engage for an entire hour but she has, every single time. She is very knowledgeable about art and has a lovely way of teaching it.
