Hampshire College (French Literature)
I am a Nashville native, and I speak fluent English (native), French and Dutch and have an intermediate knowledge of Italian. I studied French at Vanderbilt University while I was still a high school student at the University School of Nashville (USN). French Literature was my major at Hampshire College with a minor in English. Although my career took me in a different direction, years later I had the unique opportunity to live and work in the Netherlands and Belgium for five years, where I was able to use my French and Dutch on a daily basis both in work and social settings.
The structure of language is my passion, and I love to share that passion with my students for it makes each language interesting and logical. I believe the key to proficiency in any language is a strong foundation of grammar and vocabulary. Then reading, writing and conversation come more naturally and easily. I hope to pass on to my students the knowledge that languages bring the world and its diverse cultures closer together and create understanding and friendship in a global society that grows smaller on a daily basis. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
