About Paul

I am a home-school graduate (5th grade - College) who had an intricate part in my own learning experience. I went on to become a tutor in college for Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra, GRE test prep, and C++ programming. Upon completing my BA in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, I attended Vanderbilt University and received an MS in Computer Science. While there, I worked as a teacher's assistant for the introductory Java programming class. I have personal experience coding in C# as well as C++ and Java. I have a PhD from Tennessee State University's School of Engineering.

My ideology is everything is achievable. Learning is a matter of understanding your learning style. It's also a matter of connecting new information to the things you already know and love. I am a relatable tutor with over 10 years of experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C#

During my undergraduate studies, I minored in computer and tutored C++ I and C++ II courses. I then received my Masters in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University, where I worked on several projects that required C# programming. One of the larger projects I worked on involved using C# to leverage a custom cyber-physical modeling software. Here, I created custom classes to model the creation of a self-quizzing website. The code would allow the end user to auto-generate working html and php code for several question types and subjects by answering simple questions.

C++

During my undergraduate studies, I minored in computer and tutored C++ I and C++ II courses. I then received my Masters in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University. During that time, I took courses such as Intermediate Software Design, where we learned and implemented at least 20 design patterns (i.e. adapter, composite, observer, etc.). As a doctoral student, I took an additional Software Systems Design course. I also tutored underclassmen and other graduate students in Intro to C++ programming and Software Systems Design courses.

Computer Programming

During my undergraduate studies, I minored in computer and tutored C++ I and C++ II courses. I then received my Masters in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University. I served as a TA and tutor for a Java programming course while at Vanderbilt. I am currently working on my PhD in Computer and Information Systems Engineering at Tennessee State University.

I have also taught coding fundamentals to high school students during a summer bootcamp I co-coordinated for a university.

Homeschool

First, I was homeschooled from 5th until I went to college. I experienced multiple forms (from unschooling to correspondence). In the 8th grade, I began to teaching younger grades and have been tutoring ever since (over 10 years). Since then, I have gained degrees in math, computer science, and engineering. I have also continued to tutor and teach even through my PhD. Second, I been consulting homeschool parents for about seven years now. I help parents develop the best homeschool plan for their child. Lastly, I believe in using concepts or objects the student is already familiar with to explain new concepts. I believe that practical, tangible examples make for the best learning.

Java

I have a Master degree in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University. While a graduate student there, I was a teaching assistant for the Intro to Java programming class of over 100 students. I also have experience coding in Java for Android applications as part of my doctoral research.

Python

My dissertation research focused on cyber security for smartphones. The software system we built made primarily of Python code. I built custom modules, classes, as well as integrating known libraries. I have also done smaller scripts for biomedical research labs. These scripts used OpenCSV, BS4, and Tkinter to retrieve, process, and store various data. I also co-developed and taught a Python bootcamp for 8th- 11th grade students for a university.
