About Jim

I am an internationally traveled and published photographer and teacher. Recently, one of my sports photos of Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Marquez North entitled "Tennessee Diving Catch" was one of five images nominated, and won "Best Sports Photo of 2013" sponsored by Kia & USA Today AdMeter. As a current contract photographer for USA Today Sports Images, my photographs are published almost daily either on the web or in print media. I have taught photography in four institutes of higher education and also teach Digital Art & Design to high school students. My photographic career spans over forty-five years with over thirty years in film and the darkroom. My understanding of the transition from traditional film to digital is extensive. I received a BS degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. and I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS degree in Art/Photography from East Tennessee State University. I completed post graduate work toward an MFA in Art / Photography and my degree is pending.
I am a certified Career and Technical Education instructor in Graphic Communications. I have been working with Adobe CS software for more than eight years and I am currently seeking certification in Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign.

The clients for whom I have worked is extensive. A few of those clients are Sports Illustrated, ESPN Magazine, USA Today Newspaper, USA Today Sports Media Group, Stouffer Hotel, United Press International, Associated Press, Vanderbilt University, University of the South and Middle Tennessee State University.

A few of my most memorable career accomplishments are: "Best Sports Photo of 2013" sponsored by Kia & USA Today AdMeter, United Press International spot news award for flood evacuation photography in 1977, accompanying Charlie Daniels to Cuba on a USO trip to entertain US Marines at Guantanamo Bay in the late 1980's, assigned to photograph the Soccer FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010 for US Presswire (currently USA Today Sports Images). Some other highlights, include photographing three U.S. Presidents and numerous entertainers.

I enjoy working with and mentoring students who desire to learn photography and related subjects while increasing their knowledge, understanding, and application of the medium. I am available via email and by appointment for video chat and/or in person tutoring. I am willing to travel as time, money, and scheduling allows.

Under my tutelage students will be evaluated for their current level of knowledge before beginning instruction. Instruction will then be tailored to the students personal needs and learning desires.
A student will learn to exhibit a full understanding of proper exposure and the exposure values within an image necessary to achieve a desired result. The student will use the light meter in various lighting situations to achieve a desired exposure and avoid over and under exposure.
Once the student can control exposure, the student will employ the use of the camera settings to understand and control "Depth of Field" and how to use it to improve their images. The student will develop an understanding of lens focal lengths, (telephoto lenses, wide angle lenses, and close-up macro or micro lenses) and learn when and how to use each lens. Lens perspective and how to use perspective to improve your photos and achieve the desired image will also be achieved.
Good photographs require the student to develop a sense of photographic composition and subject arrangement within the image. Practice assignments will be tailored to achieve this goal.

Students who demonstrate a level of proficiency in the above areas after the initial evaluation, will be challenged with assignments of an advanced nature. While commensurate with their level of understanding, assignments will be designed to challenge their ability. These students will be trained to work more professionally while producing consistent quality results within minimum deadlines.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I am proficient in Photoshop. It is my primary photography editing and enhancement software application. When I am on assignment for work, I will process between 30 - 75 images through Photoshop in about 2 hours time.

If you want to master Photoshop, it will require years of use, and processing 1000's of images.

If you want to learn how to use Photoshop, this can be accomplished in a about 10 lessons depending on the time you devote to the process.

Drawing

I hold a BS in education from The University of Tennessee at Martin

I have a BS degree in ART from East Tennessee State University.

I completed all classroom course work toward an MFA in ART at East Tennessee State University (degree pending).
