Vanderbilt University (Secondary Education and Biology)

About Ty

I am a rising senior at Vanderbilt University majoring in Secondary Education and Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in Spanish. I plan on becoming a high school science teacher, and I would love to teach in a dual immersion classroom to combine my interests of science and Spanish.

My passion for science and math developed in middle school, and I cultivated my interest in these subjects in the following years. In high school at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), I took advanced math, science, and language courses including multivariable calculus, microbiology and disease, molecular and cellular biology, a seminar in stem cell biology, advanced chemistry, and Spanish V.

I've continued my advanced coursework at Vanderbilt University with inorganic and organic chemistry, advanced molecular genetics, and cell biology. In my current secondary education program, I have learned essential techniques in classes and through observations of middle and high school classes that I use when tutoring to ensure students' success.

I've been conducting research in yeast genetics investigating the use of a CRISPR system to indude double-stranded breaks (DSBs) in the yeast genome to investigate de novo telomere addition. I attended and presented at a conference at the University of Alabama in the spring of 2016.

I have tutored students in SAT, ACT, and everything math or science since I was in high school both privately and through WyzAnt. I am well qualified to tutor since I scored well on standardized tests such as the AP exams (Biology: 5, Chemistry: 4, and BC Calculus: 5), the ACT (34 composite, 35 math, 35 science), and the SAT (800 math), and I currently have a 3.6 GPA at Vanderbilt University.

I work as a tutor at the Stratton Foster Academic Support Center at Vanderbilt University and have 200+ hours of experience tutoring in chemistry (inorganic and organic) and math (calculus).

I do not have access to transportation and will need to meet at at a public location on Vanderbilt University campus, although there are many excellent libraries for sessions!

I am patient and understanding and will use my knowledge of math and science to adapt to any student to ensure his or her success!

Ty is a wonderful teacher, a good friend to my children, he's well mannered, he's patient, educated, but most of all:: He's UNBELIEVABLY BRILLIANT!!! — Ty came to our home to help my two children with Algebra, Spanish, and Biology. They were resistant at first to have a tutor, but right after the first session both kids couldn't wait for TY to come back. I just overheard my daughter brag to her friend on how her tutor knows everything there is to know about every subject. Ty has helped them improve their grades dramatically and has been exactly ...
