About Andrew

I am a professional educator. This is my ONLY job--not a side job--and I love it. My favorite thing about tutoring, other than nerding out with new clients, is erasing the C, D, or F my students might currently be earning BEFORE those final grades are ever recorded. That means scheduling a session and becoming clearer about the material right away so that you or your child can start performing better before it's too late. Think of me as a resume builder for your future self--we want that transcript looking nice and shiny when you hand it over to the hiring manager at that dream job!

My experience comes from two years of teaching chemistry, physics, and anatomy at an exclusive private school and four years of tutoring professionally, and four years of tutoring full-time. I began tutoring at MTSU in the department of Disabled Student Services, before striking out on my own to work with students of ALL ages. Along the way, I've learned how to make life easier for students facing some serious academic challenges as well as for strong students who've simply fallen a little behind. Here's the secret to doing my job: Have you ever felt about a teacher or tutor that you wish they had "another way of explaining it," sometimes after you've heard it twice already? Finding that "other way" is what I specialize in. I've been doing this long enough to know that different people hear differently, and I listen to my students closely enough to get through.

I am currently only taking students with whom I am a good fit in chemistry and physical science, because these are my favorite areas to work in and I know how focus with these students and get results. If you have a high schooler falling behind in chemistry or are taking your first year of college chemistry or introductory science, I can help you understand the material and get the grades you want without pulling your hair out. If what you've read so far makes sense, let's schedule a meeting and talk about how to get more out of the time and effort you are spending.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I currently teach chemistry at the Gateway Academy in Nashville, TN, and I have several years experience tutoring the subject. I love taking a conceptual approach, teaching concepts instead of memorization, and I am very effective at making the math portions easier to deal with.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am familiar with the Common Core standards, adopted by the Tennessee Board of Education. And I have also studied the developmental milestones appropriate for each age group in math and English. But most of all, I have experience tutoring students of young ages in both math and English, and I have had a good deal of success helping these students to advance.

English

I currently teach high school English at the Gateway academy in Nashville TN. As a writer, I have taken some masters-level coursework in Literary Criticism at Belmont's Graduate school of English. At the end of my first semester at Belmont, I was invited to present a conference-length paper at the Sigma Tau Delta literary conference in Chattanooga. I have also published a piece called "An Existential Take on the Experience of Illness" in Vanderbilt's medical humanities journal. And I have written an Honors Thesis at MTSU that focuses on the connections between logic and language.

Grammar

I have worked one-on-one with several younger students seeking to master the fundamentals of language. I also currently teach high school English at the Gateway academy in Nashville TN.

Logic

I have a degree in Philosophy from MTSU. As a part of the curriculum, I was required to demonstrate competency in Logic and Critical thinking. Since then, I have continued to study mathematical logic as a part of my thesis on the topic of logic, language, and formal semantics.

Piano

I have minor in Music from MTSU where my primary instrument was piano. I have also worked as a professional musician for several years playing in many bands. I have recorded, produced, and arranged music for myself and others. During this time, I have also given piano lessons to both adults and young learners. I am comfortable teaching people how to play in a way that exposes them to music theory, while still keeping things fun.

Works well with my teenager — Andrew has been tutoring my 16 year old son in chemistry for about a month now. Success hasn't been instant, of course, but things are slowly improving and I'm sure that's because of his sessions with Andrew. We will continue to employ his services and I would recommend him to any other parent who has a child struggling with the sciences. ...
