Once a ministerial student at Baylor University, I graduated with a major in Spanish and minors in Religion and Psychology. After graduation, I spent two years in Brazil working in community development building schools, reinforcing the School Lunch Program, and teaching English as Another Language. I married a schoolteacher; we have been married now for 46 years.
After returning from Brazil, I did three years of post-graduate work at the University of Texas in Spanish, Portuguese, and linguistics.
I retired from the IRS after careers as a bilingual Tax Law Specialist (writing taxpayer education publications in Spanish and English) and as an IBM mainframe programmer/analyst (ALC and COBOL with SQU). During my careers I majored in accounting and data processing on mainframes.
After retirement, I was given a grant to study Social Work at the University of South Carolina. In 2004 I was graduated with a Master of Social Work (with a 4.0 average).
Berlitz School of Languages in Nashville, TN (now defunct) certified my abilities in Spanish, English, and Portuguese as "native fluency"; it also awarded me instructor of the year in 2000.
I love teaching. I learn from interaction with those who study with me. All I ask is that you put forth your best effort--for yourself, not for me or for anyone else. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
