I have a lifelong love of teaching and learning. While most of my 20 years of teaching has been on the college and university levels (including online teaching), I have also taught high school students over the years.
I specialize in tutoring and teaching English, writing, and American Literature. My teaching is student-centered rather than teacher-centered in that I work to help you to gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter through your active rather than passive learning. If you are struggling to write a college-level essay, I can help you to clarify your ideas, to formulate a thesis statement, and to develop an outline. If you are studying for the ACT or SAT, I can assist you in preparing yourself for the English and verbal sections of those tests. Additionally, I can assist you in understanding poetry and other literary works by introducing you to the methods of literary analysis.
I do prefer to conduct my tutoring online; however, if you feel you would learn better in a live, physical environment, I would agree to limited travel in my area.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to achieve success in your studies! I have a lifelong love of teaching and learning. Online tutoring is $65 weekly per subject area. The week begins on Monday and concludes on Sunday.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When I worked in the Educational Talent Search program at Tusculum College, I held several ACT preparation workshops for high school juniors and seniors who were planning to take the test, and I have stayed up-to-date on the test format and requirements. I also tutored students over the English section of the ACT when I worked at Sylvan Learning Centers.
Looking for context clues within reading passages is very important when you take the ACT Reading portion of the test. I can show you how to do that! Both my MA and BA degrees are in English. I have taught English on the high school and postsecondary levels for 20 years. In 2008, I also worked part-time for Sylvan Learning Centers tutoring elementary and high school students in English (spelling and writing).
As a writing and reading instructor, I also teach the basics of grammar--the parts of speech, subject/verb agreement, pronoun/antecedent agreement, and correct punctuation. I also teach sentence structure by using sentence-combining activities that help you to develop a maturity in your writing style, a skill that becomes increasingly necessary and valued as you progress through your college or university courses. I will always tailor my instruction to any of the specific grammar issues which you are striving to master.
Most of my teaching experience in literature has been in the poetry and short story genres. American Literature to 1865 has been one of my particular areas of focus; however, my Master's thesis is an in-depth analysis of three novels by the nineteenth-century British novelist Thomas Hardy. I've also had many years of study and teaching experience in analyzing literary conventions and devices common used by authors.
Having graded and evaluated student essays for over 20 years, I have a keen eye for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I utilize different tools and strategies for proofreading that appeal to a variety of learning styles. One of my primary goals is to teach you to be able to produce clear, error-free written work so that your reader gains a clear understanding of your message.
Research shows that reading and writing skills are interconnected and interdependent. I taught developmental reading to incoming freshmen at East Tennessee State University, and in those courses, I stressed the PQ3R method (Preview, Question, Read, Recite, and Review). I teach how to look for context clues to assist reading comprehension and learning, which improves overall literacy skills.
The SAT Reading test often contains unfamiliar vocabulary and reading challenges in regard to sentence and paragraph structure. I can teach you how to determine the context of a sentence or a passage in relation to the words around it in order to figure out the correct answer. I can also assist you in developing wise text-taking strategies in order to maximize your score on that section of the test.

I taught Spanish in the Upward Bound program at Tusculum College. More recently, I used Spanish regularly when I worked for several years as a Bilingual Customer Service Representative at Citicards.
Developing and broadening your vocabulary becomes increasingly important as you advance through your college or university courses. I place an emphasis on the etymology of words to increase your understanding of language. This will also help you to recognize the meanings of prefixes and suffixes, and to clarify root words. These skills will also assist you in learning the kinds of often-specialized vocabulary used in a given profession.
I have had 20 years of experience in teaching writing on the college level. I have mostly taught expository and persuasive research essay writing. I teach writing as a process, from prewriting, to drafting, revising, and editing. I am also well-versed in the MLA and APA styles of documentation for sources. In 2006, I also served on the Senior Writing Proficiency Examination Committee at East Tennessee State University.
