About Debra

I recently retired from teaching special education students in grades KK-12. I have prepped students for state and national tests. I am a National Board Certified teacher and a level 5 teacher. My teaching philosophy is that every student can be successful.

My students with exceptional needs earned their high school diplomas and several went on to college or a job. I like helping kids rise to their potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I taught as a special education teacher for over 20 years. I am a State of TN Certified Special Education Teacher (K-12). I am a National Board Certified teacher in Special Education birth to 22 years old. I am a SMILA trained teacher and I taught students with learning disabilities (ADHD, ADD and dyslexia) in a resource classroom. I tutored a kid with ADHD privately for a year. I taught kids with ADD, ADHD and other learning disabilities through the SMILA Institute during the summer.

SMILA is a classroom approach adopted from Orton Gillingham and Slingerland and is aligned with Common Core. This is a research based, structured multi-sensory approach designed to help teach children
the following: Phonology, Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Handwriting, Spelling, Written Expression, Reading Fluency, Reading Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension.

Handwriting

I have taught handwriting skills to elementary students and young adults with special needs.
I took a course in handwriting techniques at the Simultaneous Multisensory Institute of Language Arts for the purpose of teaching students with learning disabilities how to write more legibly. Cursive and manuscript writing were a part of the curriculum I taught in my classroom as a teacher for Shelby County Schools.

Phonics

I am a State of TN Certified Special Education Teacher (K-12). I am a National Board Certified teacher in Special Education birth to 22 years old. I am a SMILA trained teacher and I taught students with learning disabilities (ADHD, ADD and dyslexia) in a resource classroom.

Prealgebra

I taught Prealgebra and Algebra for 5 years.

Reading

I am a certified teacher. I have been trained to teach reading through the SMILA program and using the LANGUAGE curriculum for students with reading difficulties.

Writing

I am certified highly qualified in English by Shelby County Schools. I taught English at the high school level for several years with Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools. I prepped students for the writing assessment at the middle and high school level. I am a certified teacher with a Masters. I mentored teachers preparing for the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. These teachers had to write to specific standards in the process of developing a portfolio. I am a two time National Board Certified Teacher.
