In teaching English Composition, students are taught vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Students are also taught sentence and paragraph structure with particular emphasis on critical thinking skills. They are also asked to read and interpret, using their own words, various assignments taken from real-world occurrences. Activities such as this serve to further develop critical thinking skills.
In teaching English as a Second Language, each student is met at his or her particular skill level and encouraged to verbally participate in his or her own area of interest. This kind of Interactive participation encourages confidence and creates the necessary interest and desire to continue building vocabulary essential for success. I absolutely love the feeling of satisfaction I get encouraging and motivating students to succeed. Watching their delight in mastering each new skill is honestly my joy.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a Master's degree in ESL, and a TEFL Certificate, all from the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, where I taught English Composition for ten years, Intro to writing and literature courses. I taught during one summer at the University of Pilzen, Czech Republic. I successfully implemented and am facilitator of Conversations in English, a program designed for speakers of other languages at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library in Memphis, TN.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
