About Nia

I am a native of Memphis, TN. I have always had an interest in working with children. I studied special education while in the Education program at the University of Memphis. During that time, I participated in practicum that allowed my to work with students that had learning disabilities, behavior disorders, and health impairments. Those experiences allowed me to understand the needs of the students that I work with today. With 10 years of teaching experience in the elementary setting of the Legacy Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools systems, I have been able to transform non-readers into readers and provide long lasting strategies to students who struggle with math. I currently provide pull-out instruction and co-teaching instruction to 1st and 4th grade students who have identified areas of deficit in reading fluency, basic reading, reading comprehension, math problem solving, and math calculations. Although I presently work with two grade levels, I have experience with working with kindergarten through 5th grade. I am very familiar with the general education curriculum. My co-teaching experience allows me to implement that curriculum while supporting all students; students with disabilities and students without disabilities.

I am excited about the added experience that I will get with WyzAnt. I have participated in many tutoring programs provided by the public school system and have enjoyed all of them. Its excites me to see students build their confidence in learning.

Over the years I have been to many training sessions to strengthen my teaching performance in Math. Math is a skill of problem-solving that requires many steps, and I am knowledgeable of mnemonic devices and acronyms that can increase students' performance in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, and word problems.

I currently provide interventions to students with poor word decoding skills. I provide small group instruction to them to strengthen their phoneme segmenting skills. I focus heavily on vocabulary, because I serve at a school that is highly populated with students who are learning English as a second language.

My experience of 10 years in special education has taught me that all students learn in different ways and different rates. I realize that children's needs are not "cookie cutter" and that students learn better when you build on their strengths.

Please contact me if you are ready to learn and feel that I can help. I want to see the difference in you and I'm sure you do to!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am qualified to serve students with ADHD because I have an active teaching license in Special Education. I have received training that taught me how to provide accommodations to students with inattention and hyperactivity. I currently provide instruction to students with ADHD.

Phonics

I currently work with students using the EASY CBM program to track progress with student performance in phonics. I do small group lessons based on lessons from the Journeys reading series to help students practice with phoneme segmenting. I also use the TeachersPayTeachers site to generate activities and learning centers for phonic practice. This done weekly and under the supervision of school administration.
