About Brittany

I fell in love with language and literature at a very early age. As a child, I would memorize the books read to me and repeat them back to whomever would listen. English, naturally, was always my very best subject throughout elementary, middle, and high school and I excelled in essay contests, spelling bees, the vocab and reading comprehension sections of standardized tests, and most any other reading/writing-related exercises.

I decided to pursue degrees in English after reading Charles Dickens's classic, A Tale of Two Cities (this should be in italics, but, sadly, that is not an option with this platform) in my 12th grade English class. I was so enamored with the prose, the magnificent twists and turnings of the English language, that I knew I just had to keep going.

Since then, I graduated summa cum laude with my BA in English and my MA three years later. I have taught English composition at both the University of Memphis and Strayer University. I have acted as writing and grammar consultant for various employers. To this day I continue to read both contemporary and classic literature.

As an English scholar, I know hard work. I know painstakingly proofreading in the wee hours of the morning. I know reading and re-reading each and every word, sentence, paragraph, page in search of the smallest spelling, punctuation, grammatical, syntax, or formatting error. And I love it.

I know not everyone shares the love I have for language, literature, and writing. I do not expect to convert new believers in words. I do, however, love to share my knowledge and affinity for the written word with others. I enjoy watching comprehension dawn in another's eyes when teaching how to craft a perfect essay or how to glean the most out of a seemingly rough-written epic poem.

I would love to assist you with your English subject needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Softball

I began playing recreational softball (both fast and slow pitch) at age 8. I played competitive high school softball as a fast-pitch pitcher (JV and Varsity) and starting left-fielder (Varsity until senior). I currently play recreational adult co-ed slow pitch softball as a starting first baseman and all-position player as needed.
