Knowledge is the key that unlocks the door to success; I am passionate about helping students open that door. I have been an educator for over 10 years, and I absolutely love helping students learn. I prepared for my journey into teaching at Christian Brothers University where I obtained my Master's degree in education and became a certified teacher. After several years in the classroom, I felt it necessary to pursue a Reading Specialist degree from Harding University in an effort to better serve students with reading deficiencies.

As previously stated, I love the work I do in the classroom. I also thoroughly enjoy working one on one with students. I enjoy tutoring individual students because they are more apt to truly grasps concepts that they have not been able to understand during whole group instruction. The students I have tutored in the past have been more successful after receiving more individualize instruction. I love seeing their facial expression when the lightbulb goes off in their head.

I am an outstanding math tutor because I teach students different strategies that can be used to solve a problem while arriving at the same answer. Knowing and using different mathematical strategies to solve problems is very helpful especially when students complete performance tasks on standardized assessments.

I am an outstanding English tutor because I work to first teach students how to read. I then transition into teaching them how to read to learn. Reading to learn is where a great deal of students' knowledge comes from so it is essential. Another thing that makes me a great English tutor is that I teach writing through reading. This is not only helpful when students are asked to perform on standardized assessments, but it is also a way for students to showcase their understanding of common themes presented in literary texts.

I look forward to helping you unlock the door to your success through education!

Grammar

Grammar

As an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher in the world of Common Core State Standards (CCSS), I am tasked with helping students learn to think more critically about and analyze what they are reading. Because this is such a large undertaking, not much time is devoted to the continuous teaching and learning of grammar skills within the CCSS. However, I know the importance of being able to use parts of speech properly, identify and use homophones correctly, and write complete sentences. These and other grammar skills are ones that I put forth an effort to incorporate into my instruction as an ELA teacher. In the quest to improve reading within our schools, communities, and country at large, we still have to focus on basic grammar skills.

I recently began my 10th year in education. My years in the classroom along with time spent in various professional development courses has afforded me the opportunity to provide individualized math instruction to students outside the classroom. I frequently arm myself with best teaching practices, and I ensure learning is engaging for students by preparing lessons that focus on students indiviaul learning styles which has proved to be beneficial in regards to their individual growth.

Writing

Writing

Although I have primarily focused on teaching reading for the past 5 years of my career, I recognize the importance of good writing skills as well. The two areas should not be taught separately, but instead in tandum. Research has shown that tying reading and writing curriculums together is beneficial for students especially in the world of Common Core State Standards. I have found great joy in teaching students how to effectively write paragrphs and essays in response to literature based questions after reading and analyzing the texts. Placing emphasis on writing through reading is helping to prepare students for college and life beyond.
