About Anna

My name is Anna: I am 23 and in the process of finishing up my last two classes at Michigan State University to complete my bachelors degree in Psychology. I am currently employed as a site supervisor for the Family School Partnership program sponsored through the Capital Area Literacy Coalition. My main responsibilities for this position are managing and instructing a small class of children between the ages of 3 and 11 years old and creating and implementing lesson plans that incorporate literacy and science. I also work part time as an in-home special education tutor for a family with a special needs daughter. My experience with children and teaching goes way beyond this: before my current employment I worked as a behavior coach for children with developmental and physical disabilities, I have volunteered as a tutor for Refugee Development Center teaching English to 7 and 8 year olds, and have even been an assigned mentor for a child in the juvenile justice system. In fact, all of this experience and my desire to work with children has helped me to gain a position within AmeriCorp's City Year program where I will spend a year teaching, tutoring, and mentoring young children in the inner-city schools of Memphis, Tennessee next year! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored all subjects at Alpena Community College when I worked as a student tutor. I volunteer at an elementary school teaching reading and writing to children through MSU's student literacy core. I am a senior at Michigan State University, my GPA is above a 3.0.

English

I work as a site supervisor for Capital Area Literacy Coalition's Family School Partnership program. I teach activities incorporating art, science, and literacy activities to a classroom of children between ages two and twelve. I also volunteer through the Refugee Development Center's After School Tutoring program where I teach English to a group of third grade students.

Reading

I have just recently received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Michigan State University. I now am employed part time by a Literacy Coalition as a site supervisor for a program where I create and implement a lesson plan incorporating reading and language activities for children ages two to thirteen years of age. Last winter I volunteered through the Read to Succeed program where I created and implemented a lesson plan for a nine year old boy that taught him reading and writing.
