About Desiree

I have 10+ years’ experience working with students ages 4-13 as a Substitute Teacher with Memphis City/Shelby County Schools. This experience has often involved one-on-one tutoring and working with students with special needs. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Professional Writing. In all my dealings with students, I truly believe in being patient and kind, always striving to make a positive, lasting impact. I am inspired by knowing I am making a difference in the lives of my students!

I have received extensive coursework in English grammar, writing, and literature. In my experience as a Teacher, I have had the opportunity to help many students improve their skills in these areas.

In addition to teaching English, I have had 10+ years experience in teaching a wide variety of Elementary Education subjects. I feel that it is a privilege to teach in my community, approaching each assignment as an opportunity to touch a young life.

I have always been impressed with my special needs students. The efforts they make inspires me to give them my all. I appreciate any opportunity I have to instruct special needs students, recognizing the need to be adaptable, focused, and patient.

Finally, I am a music lover! I would appreciate any opportunity to aid students in the basics of reading music, having learned and excelled in this skill in high school.

I offer a free consultation meeting with students and parents; I feel that it is important to ensure the right fit between myself and my students. I am willing to work with lessons/homework provided by current teachers and I also offer prepared lessons to help my students succeed. I am happy to meet my students in the location that is most convenient for them.

I sincerely look forward to hearing from you and having the privilege of being a part of your educational success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In my 10+ years of teaching, I have had numerous assignments which involved teaching students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I understand that it requires personal knowledge of the student, flexibility, and patient instruction. I also understand the value of effective communication with parents of students with ADD/ADHD in order to ensure success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 10+ years’ experience working with students ages 4-13 as a Substitute Teacher with Memphis City/Shelby County Schools. This experience has often involved one-on-one tutoring and working with students with special needs. My duties have included managing Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms, performing teaching and extracurricular duties, maintaining a clean and safe environment for my students, and conducting conferences with parents as needed.

General Music

I learned and excelled at reading music in high school, having been deeply involved with playing the alto saxophone in the high school band. During my junior year, I received 'The Bandsman Award' for being the most outstanding band member. I am still a music lover, continuing to play the saxophone from time to time as a hobby.

Phonics

I have extensive experience in teaching phonics skills to elementary school students. I generally use charts or practice sheets that emphasize individual letter sounds as well as the sounds of blended letters. Recently, I have been teaching an adult phonics skills during my volunteer work. I am passionate about students of all ages learning to excel in their reading by becoming proficient in the basics of phonics.
