Vanderbilt University (Spanish, Child Development)

I am a hard-working medical student with a variety of interests; one such passion is a growing desire to help others not only learn, but enjoy the process of learning as well. I have a full year of experience tutoring other medical students in anatomy, both in group settings and with individual students. Through my experience I have learned that students have the mental capacity to learn the material, but they often lack the structure, direction, motivation or confidence they need to truly flourish. My goal is to provide those initial steps, empowering my students and helping them realize their true potential.
My interests are truly all over the board: at Vanderbilt I double-majored in Spanish and Child Development and had a double-minor in Biology and Chemistry. As such, I have an extensive background with a variety of subjects. However, I am particularly passionate about tutoring students studying Spanish, algebra, anatomy, biology and English (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary). Other subjects with which I am comfortable include biology, genetics, and ACT prep.
I work with students to create individualized goals and plans so that they learn how to create study plans on their own. I hold myself to a high standard and frequently ask for feedback regarding my methods.
As a medical student, I can be flexible up to a point. I do have a 12-hour cancellation policy, and I am always willing to discuss makeup classes.
I prefer to tutor in quiet areas to minimize distractions and make the best use of the time, and I am able to travel to locations convenient for the student.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your highest goals! Really liked that he had problems already worked out that I had sent before the session, uses time efficiently, welcomes questions, lot of enthusiasm and patience.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience with anatomy tutoring includes the following: group tutoring in anatomy lab for dental students, Spring 2014; group tutoring in anatomy lab for medical students, Fall 2014; and individual anatomy lab tutoring for medical students, Fall 2014.
In my pre-medical and medical school training, genetics is a subject that has come up many times. In fact, it is perhaps my favorite of the basic sciences that form the foundation of my medical curriculum. From Mendelian inheritance and Punnett squares and pedigrees to the more complex genetic abnormalities and modes of inheritance, genetics is an intimidating but manageable subject. I'd love to work with you if you're having trouble understanding the concepts of genetics!
My experience with Spanish includes the following: three years of high school Spanish; four years of college-level Spanish, with a Spanish degree from Vanderbilt University; seven weeks of study abroad in Madrid, Spain, with a host family; and a 2-week medical mission trip in Costa Rica and Panama as a medical interpreter and medical student.
