Claflin University (Math Education)
Hello to all of my future students. My name is Omari M., and I specialize in tutoring math at all levels from middle school up to some college courses. I have been professionally tutoring since 2008, when I started tutoring math for Huntington Learning Center, mostly preparing students for the math section of the SAT. I have tutored all levels of students all the way through college math students, where I worked for ASA Institute in Brooklyn, NY as a math tutor. I have tutored various math subjects including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus and standardized test math. Currently, I am in my third year in the classroom (the second as a math teacher), where I currently teach high needs middle school students Common Core math.
Tutoring is what started my love for teaching others. I was in college searching for a community service opportunity when I came upon it, and I have loved teaching others math ever since. The experience of teaching my fellow classmates influenced my decision to become an educator. While teaching can be a struggle at times, I am driven by the pleasure I get out of seeing others succeed. It is with this passion that I tutor my students, so that they can be successful at math, a subject that is vital to their success in life.
I continue to refine my craft as a tutor and teacher, and have been highly rated as a tutor by students and supervisors alike, even being called "the best math tutor that we have" at the Huntington Learning Center where I previously worked. I believe in making and having solid reference material to use, so I like to give and/or have students make guided notes so that they have something to refer back to when they are practicing their problems. In addition, I like to give students guided practice, so that they can try each concept that I teach with my help. Once they seem to master the guided practice, I like to let them practice a lot of problems on their own and provide them with feedback as they practice. It is though this teaching style that I can get high achievement from my students.
I like to tutor in quiet environments such as the local library. I am also available to come to your home after school hours, meaning I can be at your home from 4pm up to 9 PM on weeknights. On the weekends, I am more available and have the ability to work in the mornings and afternoons. I am flexible with my scheduling, but do ask that if you are going to cancel a session to give me a 24 hour notice.
I look forward to working with your students. Happy learning! Hello to all of my future students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
