Hello my name is Marlene F. with a background that encompasses entrepreneurial experience and educational awareness. Prior to entering the teaching profession, I owned a financial services business - clients received financial planning and strategies through investment workshops. Schools requested me to speak at their Career Day festivities about the positive effects of investing. These school visits prompted my interest in academics. I enjoy teaching and creatively working with students to inspire inquiry as well as discovery of their full potential. Students also appreciate the integration of my professional experience within subject content.
My qualifications comprise undergraduate political science and history, in addition to law school content. Moreover, I have experience teaching 8th grade Social Studies - prior to full time teaching, I substituted social studies, language arts, math and science content. My enrollment in Grand Canyon University’s graduate program has intensified my passion for literacy; as a result, I have acquired the skills needed to improve student reading, writing, dialogue and listening ability.
21st Century classrooms require diverse learning strategies, student - centered activities and interesting projects which foster high achievement. Thus, I utilize effective pedagogy which includes prereading, brainstorming, adolescent literature, graphic organizers and understanding text structure. These are some of the strategies and activities which I use to peak and engage students’ capability for learning.
My students review the components of reading that comprise expository text. They often ask, “What is expository text?” It consists of any and everything that informs – texting friends, maps, and menus in a restaurant, ingredients located on a package of chewing gum, signs along the road, or directions to a friend’s house. My students and I collaboratively discuss various strategies which will be used to determine those which will be most enriching for their learning.
At the present, I am pursuing a Masters in Secondary Education where literacy skills - dialogue, listening, reading and writing - are strongly emphasized to achieve optimum achievement. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Teaching secondary students and mentoring have placed me in the position to consult with students regarding higher education. Field trips are set to explore, ask questions and to visually see the facilities which they will be attending. Students are encouraged to apply to at least 5-10 colleges. The process includes demonstrating the final product for students to see as they began drafting and rewriting responses to questions. Scholarship applications are consistently made available in order for students to gain an early start. Letters are also written by students to discover more about the nature of a scholarship or grant and its qualifying criteria. Local and national scholarships are displayed as they learn how to proficiently research these opportunities independently and collaboratively. I am enrolled in Grand Canyon University's master of secondary education. For the past year, I have structured curriculums, diversified learning strategies which complement student learning styles. I look forward to structuring a learning curriculum to enhance your reading, writing, and grammar skills.
Teaching middle school social studies allows the integration of vocabulary, intonation, phonics and root word recognition. Vocabulary activities are introduced prior to reading to give students ample opportunities to practice syllabication, phonics and word recognition.
I am currently enrolled in Grand Canyon University's Master's program which encompasses a great deal of reading literacy. Strategies are used in the program for teaching phonetic sounds and increasing fluency. These strategies are also being used successfully in the classroom. By allowing students to practice these basic skills, reading comprehension increases tremendously.
Throughout my career, public speaking has always been one of the primary skills for which I could rely upon to reinforce learning in the classroom or strengthen business transactions. Prior to teaching, entrepreneurship taught me the benefits of public speaking in order to grow a financial planning business - seminars, workshops and networking were extremely beneficial for the business. The brokerage firm that hired me years ago taught presentation skills which have been honed over the years. Local schools began requesting me to speak at “Career Day” activities which also prompted my interest in teaching.
In secondary classrooms, students learn most effectively through cooperative learning. Grouping allows students to develop respect for different points of view and to integrate strategies that can improve their study skills. Effective strategies such as timing students while completing tasks helps to improve time management at school and at home. During tutoring sessions, students are asked to count the number of subjects they must study and to set a time limit that will be spent learning each subject. Breaks are calculated so that students understand that there is a substantial benefit to taking breaks in order to successfully commit to a study routine.
