About Charleen

I have taught high school and college English and specialize in reading, composition, and grammar. I also have expertise in teaching study skills and test taking. I ran a tutoring center in college for two years and have three years of experience with tutoring for learning centers. I'd love to help you pass the GRE, GED, SAT, PSAT, ACT, or to become a better writer or reader.
I believe that difficulties once isolated can be overcome with a good plan, resources, and effort. Sometimes not knowing how to best take a test or not quite grasping a concept or a rule can create barriers that are like walls that prevent success. We can knock those walls down together. Let's talk about how I can help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English sections include specific types of questions and writing. As a former English teacher, I am confident that I can help you prepare for the ACT, shorten your test-taking time, and raise your confidence about acing this important test. I can also work with you to improve your writing skills.

ACT Reading

Reading is a skill. I help students with reading comprehension using timed drills and by teaching how to analyze material for facts and answers to question types they will encounter on the ACT Reading Test. I offer practice too on handling questions requiring inferred assessment and opinion.

ACT Science

ACT Science is a section of the ACT designed to test reading comprehension and the ability to sort through facts to derive answers. I teach how to recognize what is being asked as well as how to best answer the specific types of questions in this science section of the ACT.

English

I can help to solve problems with grammar, composition, reading comprehension, and/or study skills.

GRE

I can help you with any problem areas, with test-taking and study skills, and will raise your confidence level on taking the GRE.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking is a varied discipline. I have taught speech, judged debate, and have a minor in Communications. I am both qualified and eager to help increase your comfort level with public speaking and your delivery.

SAT Reading

Prep for SAT Reading should include techniques, tips, and guided practice on mastering how to take this important part of the SAT. SAT Reading prep should also feature assessing and isolating any problem areas and conquering them for learning, as well as test and future academic success. Tutoring for SAT Reading is my specialty. I can help!

Social Studies

I love the inclusiveness of the National Curriculum Standards for social studies. I have experience explaining civic standards, history as it relates to cultures, and also am well-read in archaeology, anthropology, political science, and sociology. I have the equivalent of a BA in religious studies. With my teaching, library, and well-rounded backgrounds I feel confident that I may tutor students in social studies.

Study Skills

Study skills are tips and techniques to make learning more efficient, productive, and effective. Time management scheduling charts, note taking, SQ3R, practice quizzes, using acronyms to aid in memorization, and flashcards are all valid study skill methods that I can teach you how to use to your academic advantage.

Theatre

I have taught drama as literature and also as performance. My technical experience includes stage management, set design, makeup, props, production, promotion, and coaching.

Writing

Success and ease with creative writing, essay writing, composition, and grammar is my commitment to you.

Happy customer

Charleen met with my daughter in May 2012 to help with ACT testing. Charleen was patient and able to speak at the level that my daughter was able to understand. We have met with other tutors prior to Charleen but she seemed to have the ability to help where others could not. In addition, Charleen seems to understand customer service and take the initiative for follow-ups.
