Columbia College (French, SLP)
Ashford University MEd (Master's)
My name is Keren and I am Columbia College graduate. I have a bachelor's degree in French and Speech Language Pathology. Currently, I am a French and ESL teacher with Shelby County Schools. From working with ESL students, I have seen the great need for a strong literacy foundation for all students. I am also working towards a Master's of Arts in Education in Reading and my Reading Specialist certification. I have a myriad of educational field experience.
I have taught biology and French in Atlanta, GA with the Breakthrough Atlanta program. I have served as a literacy coach with Tutor Eau Claire in Columbia, SC. I was a kindergarten teacher, where I not only adhered to state standards, but I routinely incorporated the French language into daily activities. With my SLP background as well, I am able to pin point and rectify literacy/reading problems that students may demonstrate. During my undergrad years at Columbia College, I served as a part time math tutor to a middle and high school student. From since, I have tutored all areas of math including high school geometry, pre-algebra, and algebras 1 & 2.
I also have studied abroad and taught English as a Foreign Language in Angers, France, where I was able to perfect and build upon my French language speaking skills.

Keren is a great tutor! She is patient, reliable, and shows a genuine concern for my daughter's success. She uses various teaching methods to make sure that my daughter "gets it." She keeps me updated on her progress and has reassured any doubts that I may have had regarding her results. Even though my daughter has been seeing Keren for only two months; my daughter and I have noticed a positive change in her pre algebra grades. Thanks Keren!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught and tutored middle school Algebra for years. For subjects such as a math, I prefer to use a hands on method to help make learning fun, meaningful, and real. Before beginning a math lesson, assessments are performed to determine exactly where the student is having problems. This is also beneficial because the student's progress can be easily tracked thereafter.
I taught English at two different Elementary schools in Angers, France (grades pre-k through 5th grade equivalent) and in the past I have worked at a local private elementary school in Columbia, SC as a kindergarten teacher. I am currently certified to teach English as a Second Language. I have a background in Speech Language Pathology. With extensive experience in both fields, I have studied and worked with students in building phonemic awareness and literacy skills. Fun activities to promote a strong foundation in phonics include word sorts, sound boxes (with word parts, onset and rime), interactive writing, interactive reading, echo reading, etc. To track progress and assess growth, the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and the San Diego Quick Assessment is used.
