About Wil

Hello. My name is Wil D. and I am passionate about investing in children and youth, helping them grow in their skills, understand a variety of topics and disciplines, and develop a strong desire to learn. I have a rich history of teaching children, tutoring children, and working with them in a variety of setting. My experience includes working for Sylvan Learning Center as a professional tutor as well as privately tutoring Japanese students who have English as a second language. I have also tutored students in geography, geometry, literature and writing, and more. I have taught in an alternative school, done staff development cross-culturally in Paraguay, volunteered as a math and English tutor for the elementary grades in public schools, and helped to home school my own children who are elementary and middle school aged. I have taught a class on WWII History and Literature to high school aged students and taught two classes at an accredited university.

I also offer the expertise that comes with a Master's degree in education as well as 9 years experience leading a ministry to over 250 children each month. I prepared creative and clear lesson plans on a weekly basis and honed my skills as an effective communicator. I have the ability to not only connect well with students but also develop a strong relationship with parents and guardians as well. I am organized and thorough in my preparation. My desire would be to help students develop the skills necessary to not only thrive while I am tutoring them but to succeed beyond my time with them as well.

My approach to tutoring is as follows. First, I want to meet with the parent(s)/guardian(s) as well as the student to determine what the needs are. Next, I would create a short and long term plan for working with the student that would need to be agreed upon by the parent(s)/guardian(s) and I. Then we would begin. I would use a variety of resources in the learning process that are designed to engage the student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
