About Sarah

I have had a passion for helping children succeed for many years and began tutoring children in Elementary and Middle school at my local Boys and Girls Club while I was in high school. I assisted daily with reading, spelling, math, and science. I also helped two special needs children, one with autism and another with severe MR and schizophrenia, three days per week to learn daily living and socialization skills.

Since high school, I have continued my tutoring work with the Boys and Girls Club and also through my peers at the University of Tennessee at Martin. I try to volunteer one to two days a week with the Boys and Girls Club where I work primarily with students in grades K-6 with Reading and Math. I have held weekly study sessions with peers for the past two years. I assisted them with writing papers, study skills, test prep, algebra, and biology.

I currently work with a company that specializes in providing support and care for special needs adults. I assist my clients with learning how to handle their own money, read simple sentences, solve basic addition and subtraction, and care for themselves more independently.

Not only did I received a 31 in Reading on the ACT but I have also helped students improve their reading comprehension and retention. I believe that reading is something we should all be able to enjoy and not something that is frightening.

I have worked with school age children for the past 11 years and have been able to keep up with changing curriculums and standards. I want to help students learn the wonders of science and beauty of math. I enjoy seeing a student's confidence soar once they figure out an area that has been giving them problems.

I want nothing more than for a student to succeed. Because of that, I'm committed to finding the teaching method that works best for each individual student. I have used Minecraft, classic cars, space, bugs, animals, and favorite TV shows as teaching tools to further lessons. I want to meet a student where they are and encourage them to learn as much as they can without adding undue stress.

I am willing to schedule lessons at your home with you or online and I would love feedback so please feel free to contact me with any questions you have or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

When I took my ACT, I earned a 27 in the Math section with a 29 overall. I took up to Pre-Calculus while in high school and Cal II in college, earning an A in every course but Statistics. I have tutored students and peers alike in multiple math courses over the years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students in kindergarten through 8th grade in all subjects since I was a sophomore in High School at my local Boys and Girls Club, a total of 8 years. I have experience using different methods of tutoring to help students form connections and understanding of the material. I like to employ visuals when applicable to help further a student's comprehension of a subject.

Elementary Math

I have taken math courses up to Cal II and tutored peers in every course. I have 11 years experience tutoring elementary math between my volunteer work with the Boys and Girls Club and younger family members. I love math and my goal is to make it less scary, confusing, and frustrating for all involved by finding the best learning method for each individual student.

English

Most recently, I completed my Senior paper for my bachelors of science in Social Work. It was a 95 page research based case study on a fictional situation given to the class, and I received an A for my work. I have obtained some awards for my satirical essays in a former Honors English course. Also, I am well versed in MLA and APA formatting.
