Santa Monica City College (Engineering)
Hi! I look forward to helping you discover how exciting and fun learning can be even if you think the subject is either boring or difficult to grasp.
I have recently retired from the high-tech industry. I have an Associate's degree in engineering, but I have a wealth of training during my 25 years in the high tech industry. Much of my work experience over the last 20 plus years involved developing course-ware and or teaching. During those years I attended many courses and seminars to become an instructor and course developer I also learned much about learning styles and how to adapt my teaching style to an individual's particular learning style. I have a strong math and science background and love to teach. No two people learn in exactly the same way, but I believe I can help you not only learn, but enjoy learning.
The industry within which I worked provided me with challenging and rewarding opportunities to develop and teach courses. These courses were designed to instruct engineers and technicians in the operation and maintenance of our computer products. This experience allowed me to utilize my math and science background, and thereby gain a more practical insight into these studies. The use of science and math in my work-related responsibilities gave me a "real-world" relationship to these disciplines.
I continued to have a real interest in and love for science and math. My strengths are in Algebra 1, Elementary Science, Physical Science, and Geometry. Hi! I look forward to helping you discover how exciting and fun learning can be even if you think the subject is either boring or difficult to grasp.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My teaching experience during my career in the computer industry involved courses in which Algebra was a vital foundational part of the course material. It gave me an opportunity to demonstrate how important this math discipline is in the real world. It also helped me enhance my understanding of Algebra 1 and my ability to convey to others how and why it works.
I have a love for and an excellent understanding of this subject, but I recognize that understanding a subject and being able to convey that knowledge to others are two different things. My teaching responsibility in industry required that I provide a learning experience for students from a wide variety of backgrounds and ethnicity.
To me geometry involves a lot of common sense. I have a thorough knowledge of the principles and applications of geometry. Because of this I can handle questions and reinforce lessons accordingly. I will show students how to not only memorize geometry concepts, theorems, and formulas, but to understand how they came about and why they exist. I will ensure that an in depth understanding of each area of study is achieved before introducing problems. I will build on previous lessons as the study progresses, and take advantage of every opportunity to make geometry relevant to everyday life.
This is a subject that is involved in everything we do. I have had a love for physical science ever since I can remember, and as a result I have acquired an excellent knowledge of the subject through formal informal studies. As part of my job responsibility, I have taught some aspect of science for years.
The most important aspect of pre-algebra is to help students develop a strong sense of numerical relationships. I do this by manipulating integers, decimals, percents, fractions, ratios and proportions. I incorporate elementary geometry, work with variables, help you understand graphs and apply critical thinking, and help you develop general problem solving skills.
I help you discover how algebra works and why it is important. This will enable you to solve problems even if you don’t remember every formula.
I encourage you to explain your thought process and reasoning while working on a problem because I know that sometimes you know what you are dong but can’t explain it. You really know something well when you are able to communicate it to others, so together we will discover how to accomplish that.
I am able to help you learn pre-algebra because of my strong math background, because I have been trained as an instructor, and because I know how to adjust my teaching style to match your learning style.
