About Karen

I have a Master's in Education from Middle Tennessee State University. I have high expectations for my students. I strongly believe that when a child thinks, "I can do this!" they achieve their goals much faster. I've seen this in my own classroom for 22 years. Learning can be fun, with repetition thrown in. Tutoring is a way for me to continue doing what I have always loved - helping children. I have found over the years that working with someone other than mom or dad is very helpful!

I love Reading and Writing and especially teaching it. There are so many different aspects involved that parents don't usually know or think about. I believe that Phonics mastery is essential in learning to read. Many "new and better" ways to teach reading have come and gone but there is a definite sequence in learning to read: know your sounds, blending, complete sentences, reading longer passages and comprehending what was read.

I would love to help your child. REMEMBER: Learning doesn't have to be stressful!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I am qualified to teaching handwriting due to my B.S. degree. This degree is in Elementary Education from Belmont University. During my course study, I learned how to teach writing using the Zaner-Bloser method and passed all requirements in the course.

Phonics

I am qualified to teach Phonics because I was required to take many courses for my Elementary Education degree at Belmont University. The instruction consisted of phonemic awareness, segmenting words and the blending of letters/sounds. I taught Phonics throughout my 22 year elementary teaching career. I strongly believe learning Phonics is a major skill that many children need in order to achieve success in Reading.
