When students begin to grasp challenging abstract concepts, or begin to think “outside the box," it truly is a magical experience! Opening your minds by teaching you how to view the world from various perspectives develops critical thinking skills — a benchmark moment that will shape your intellectual future. These skills remain in your 'mental toolbox' throughout life, regardless of the career paths you choose.

During graduate school at UT I was employed by the History Department as a Teaching Assistant in a World History course, and after earning my MA in History, I was hired by Pellissippi State Community College to teach U.S. History (Colonial America to 1877). My students in these classes were mostly age 18, typically 3 months removed from their senior year in high school. I can say with confidence that my lectures and discussions were valuable experiences that attest to my efficacy in teaching middle and high school students. At the end of each semester, I received several student emails thanking me for rekindling their interest in history, which was an intrinsically rewarding experience. During the spring semester, 2019, I completed 30 hours of clinical observations working with 11th grade U.S. history students at Fulton High School where I helped tutor students, participated in class discussions, and led a few lessons on the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Additionally, I completed 20 hours of clinical observations working with 6th grade world history students at Hardin Valley Middle School, which was a truly rewarding experience in which I was able to challenge students to think historically, engage in discussions about citizenship and civic-mindedness, as well as lead a document-based debate on Ancient Athenian democracy. It was a memorable experience observing the excitement and natural curiosity of the students as they analyzed the primary sources and came to various evidence-based conclusions abo
