I am an experienced K-12 tutor from the highly competitive Northern Virginia region, where I have been tutoring students for over a year at a small tutoring group based in Annandale, VA. My specialties in tutoring include K-6 Elementary Education (concentration in reading and writing), English (all grade levels), and SAT English test prep. While an undergraduate at George Mason University, I served as head instructor of a three-month rigorous SAT program. During this time, I also specialized in developing new curriculum for the New SAT class, which I taught for the first time beginning in Spring 2016. In addition, I also developed K-6 and 7-9 reading and writing curriculum for all new summer programs offered during Summer 2016.
After receiving my bachelor’s degree in psychology from George Mason University, recently I went back to school at the University of Tennessee Knoxville to study K-5 Elementary Education (Go Vols!) Currently, I am looking to offer in-home or library tutoring services for K-12 English, along with test prep for the English and Writing portions of the New SAT. I am also open to online tutoring, although I prefer face-to-face interaction as I believe it is the most conducive environment for learning. I cater to all types of students, and I welcome those who are gifted or may need special accommodations.
For my teaching style, I like to balance an instructional approach with a child-centered approach in order to achieve optimal results. That is, while I believe certain fundamental skills in reading and writing must be explained to a child through direct instruction, as students begin to develop more complex thinking, creativity must be encouraged. I also emphasize critical thinking from a very early age on, and I encourage all of my students to put themselves in the writer's perspective when reading, and to understand how reading and writing work in conjunction with one another. I am also a strong believer in incentive-based learning, and I always do my best to reward student success when appropriate.
While I enjoy teaching all grade levels, I especially love teaching Elementary Education. This is the best time for students who may be falling behind to catch up to their peers when the right support systems are put in place. Additionally, with guidance students who demonstrate cognitive abilities above grade level are allowed to soar as they begin to develop their own interests through exploration. As an upcoming K-6 Elementary educator and as a tutor, I love knowing that what I do now can have positively effect students for the rest of their academic lives.
I encourage anyone who is interested in my services to contact me to discuss the needs of your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring K-12 English for over a year now in the Northern Virginia area. I have tutored multiple students in both individual and group settings in topics in Elementary and Secondary language arts, along with serving as the lead instructor for three consecutive SAT prep courses. I have both designed and delivered curriculum that I helped create using standards provided by the county, so I am well versed in the the common core, especially for K-6th grade. Although I have been tutoring for over a year, I have been working in the field of education for five years now, and my background includes working in after-school programs, in which I designed group activities for students in K-5th grade, as well as aided in homework help as necessary.
