About Dennis

Your child will receive an informative, personally tailored educational experience which provides support and encouragement. Moreover, it will provide them with an education that is mindful of their physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual needs. My desire and calling is to set up students and their families for optimal scholastic, spiritual and personal success.

I have a proven track record of helping students to develop healthy study habits and maintain the grades they and their parents desire. This spectrum has included teaching large freshman collegiate lectures, small advanced seminars and one on one tutorials with students of all ages. I am educated in - and an enthusiastic about - a wide range of academic eras, subjects and regions. I currently teach three students - in the 6th, 9th and 11th grades - in ALL of their subject areas and I am able to both teach and tutor in Math, English, Science, Bible/Religion, History/Social Studies, and other areas.

I have a lot of formal, technical and interdisciplinary education but - more important - I am able to communicate and convey any information to students in a way THEY can understand. My background treats American history in a global context and I specialize in critical race theory, gender and sexuality politics and ethnicity. I am well versed and trained in global, non-Western histories and my work instills an ability to take a whole range of complex ideas and make them understandable. But more important, I am able to work with students in a wide array of subjects, from History to Social Studies and English Language Arts/Literature to name a few.

School can often present students with a number of stressful, challenging and uncomfortable experiences. If your child feels like they are not like their peers and that they are failures, they need an ally and advocate. By working with me you can help prevent the feelings your child manages to compartmentalize from completely overtaking their daily lives.

From parental support, serving as a go-between as needed with teachers, counselors, admissions staff and one-on-one personalized tutoring with students, I create hope, proven results and empowerment for students and their families. I specialize in working with students who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and depressive disorders and enjoy working with families to embrace any diagnosis as a gift that serves as an invaluable source of strength.

I decided to take a break from my final stages of PHD work and start something I never thought I would do. Instead of becoming a traditional educator - a career I have tremendous respect for after having tutored for years, and with experience teaching - I chose to become an advocate for students and families struggling with issues that conventional education often overlooks.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My academic background is diverse, strong and incorporates interdisciplinary methods (including anthropology); I currently homeschool three boys (6th, 9th and 11th grades) in their Social Studies curriculum. My educational has equipped me with the ability to teach a wide range of histories - Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern and Modern to name a few - and I am also versed in teaching Global Histories, from Western to non-Western ones. All of my teaching is inspired by my anthropological training as an undergraduate and graduate student. I encourage my students to not only gain knowledge of people, places and events but to trends across time and space, especially as their relate to race, class, gender and other identity formations.

Basketball

I currently work with two young boys (6th and 9th grades) and their basketball skills as a core part of their homeschooling. I work on speed drills, shooting, passing and fitness to name a few areas of emphasis. I am able to teach core fundamentals along with physical and tactical dimensions of the game.

Bible Studies

My education, truing and current academic research are framed by many courses in Philosophy and Religious Studies. I also not only homeschool three boys (6th, 9th and 11th grades) but am responsible for developing and implementing their Bible coursework. I am also a staff member at my church, leader of a Bible Study small group and do ministry work. My formal and informal training combined with my experience working with students in the subject of Religion place me uniquely able to tutor in this area.

Handwriting

I am from an era when neat handwriting was required of me before the first grade - in both print and cursive forms. Moreover, I enjoy it and am well trained and versed in the methods of Catholic school handwriting, which require neatness after repeated (and repeated) drills. I am not only a parent but also someone who home schools a 6th, 9th, and 11th graders - handwriting is something I work with young students on constantly. I enjoy working with students to hone a craft that can be intimidating.

Homeschool

My academic background is strong and both it and my teaching incorporate interdisciplinary methods; I currently homeschool three brothers (6th, 9th and 11th grades) and their family has hired me to teach them in ALL of their subjects. I work with, and have experiences working with, students diagnosed with a range of conditions, from ADHD to depression. I tailor my approach to each individual student and also make sure the curriculum we use meets state guidelines. In my work I partner with some of the best educators, therapists, physicians and resources when needed to create a way for parents, students and educators to embrace something that can get lost along the way in even the best schools: ensuring students who are either homeschooled or diagnosed with disorders are set up for optimal academic success.

Reading

I currently work with sixth, ninth and eleventh graders in developing healthy reading habits. I make reading informative, fun, and a source of confidence for students.

Religion

My education and current academic research are framed by many courses in Philosophy and Religious Studies. My undergraduate Minors were in Philosophy and Religious studies. I am well versed in the practices and theologies of several World Religions. I also not only homeschool three boys (6th, 9th and 11th grades) but am responsible for developing and implementing their Bible coursework. I am also a staff member at my church and do ministry work. My formal and informal training combined with my experience working with students in the subject of Religion place me uniquely able to tutor in this area.

Social Studies

My academic background is diverse, strong and incorporates interdisciplinary methods; I currently homeschool three boys (6th, 9th and 11th grades) in their Social Studies curriculum. My educational has equipped me with the ability to teach a wide range of histories - Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern and Modern to name a few - and I am also versed in teaching Global Histories, from Western to non-Western ones. I encourage my students to not only gain knowledge of people, places and events but to trends across time and space, especially as their relate to race, class, gender and other identity formations.

Spelling

In addition to my daughter, I work with sixth, ninth and eleventh grade students on both their handwriting and spelling. In this work, we not only develop better penmanship but also build confidence in both the ability to spell AND define words better.

Study Skills

My academic background is strong and incorporates interdisciplinary methods; my education is also one that is the result of possessing study skills myself. I currently homeschool three boys (6th, 9th and 11th grades) in their Social Studies curriculum. From my current students to former undergraduate college students that I both taught and advised, I have vast experience helping students develop healthy study habits. Moreover, I work with, and have experiences working with, students diagnosed with a range of conditions (from ADHD to depression) that require unique study skills. I work with students and their families to not only develop study skills but life skills that make studying more effective.
