About Erika

I moved to Tennessee five years ago to attend Johnson University. I graduated manga cum laude with a degree in Teacher Education with an emphasis on grades 4-8. I have taught in several classrooms throughout Knox County School District as part of the state required field experience. My courses not only covered curriculum requirements, but teaching strategies using brain-based learning. My knowledge of brain based learning helps me address the individual learning styles of each student and tailor the lessons around their needs.

I worked at the Johnson University Academic Support Center for three years, tutoring adult students of in various subjects. This experience taught me how to encourage pupils how to overcome test anxiety, properly structure essays, and study more effectively. I truly believe that everybody is capable of succeeding academically, even if it takes a little extra time and effort.

I have experience preparing math lessons and helping students (both juvenile and adult) understand basic math principles from elementary math to pre-algebra.

As an academic coach, my main responsibility was proofreading papers and helping students understand the mechanics of the English language. I also have a lot of experience helping ESL students refine their writing and vocabulary.

My teaching degree required me to understand and incorporate TN Common Core into each lesson plan.

I look forward to working with you. Feel free to contact me for more information or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Part of my degree from Johnson University includes biblical studies since it is a Christian university with ties to the Stone-Campbell Movement. I have taken multiple courses on the Old and New Testaments as well as several church history classes.

Sewing

I have been sewing for over ten years. I have made numerous outfits (dresses, skirts, shirts, etc.). I also make functional items (bags, purses, household decor, etc.). I have experience quilting, hemming and altering clothes, and repairing clothes.
