About Cheryl

Teaching is my life work. I have 32 years experience teaching in public school plus eight years experience teaching in a private preschool/kindergarden. While teaching in public school I not only worked my regular teaching job, but also, worked as a homebound teacher after school.

I have also throughout the years done independent tutoring. Reading, Math, Social Studies, and Study Skills are all subjects that I have taught while tutoring. I have tutored primarily elementary and middle school students. I have however on occasion taught adults to read.

In my private life I enjoy doing things, with my husband, son, and three grandchildren. I have enjoyed going to the gym, hiking, and biking to stay fit and have fun at the same time.

I think that I am unique in that I am very patient. I also know the value of teaching the why as well as the how of math. Emphasis on word problems is one of my key tools; since, solving real life problems is the key to really understanding Math.

In teaching grammar, one must in addition to teaching the rules, manage to overcome previously incorrect grammar previously learned. A teacher who is effective must provide a great deal of oral practice in correct grammar and frequently must invest the family in backing up what the teacher has taught.

Reading is tricky, "Hooked on Phonics" ads would have you believe that phonics is all that is required. This is not all that is needed since English has so many sounds for each vowel. I believe in teaching an extensive sight vocabulary and word meaning in addition to phonic. I additionally emphasize comprehension.

I believe that my experience being a resource teacher for 20 years has provided the skills needed for homeschooling. I taught all academic subjects during those years. I also learned to work with a variety of students with unique needs.

For an excellent education, a student and teacher must maintain an open line of communication. If the student is confused or troubled about lessons it is important for the student to let the teacher know. It is also necessary for the teacher to listen to these concerns and respond to them in a helpful manner.

Also, when scheduling lessons both the teacher and the student need to be involved. If a student is forced to miss perhaps an important ballgame for the lesson, the lesson will likely be less productive. The student must in turn realize that the tutor has a life outside of tutoring. If a student frequently cancels lessons, this disrupts the tutors schedule. The two must communicate and consider what the best schedule is prior to scheduling.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by the state of Tennessee to teach all subjects k-8 in regular education and grades 1-12 in Special education. You are welcome to check with Roane County Board of Education about my test scores in Language Arts and Math. I am highly qualified grades 1-8 in Language Arts based on test scores. This information is available online for teachers in Tennessee. The only reason that I am not given highly qualified status in math is that I did not teach Math long enough after the highly qualified designation was begun.

I listed Social Studies as a subject that I can tutor because I have tutored it successfully using a study skills approach, and I have taught it successfully. I am aware that you likely do not recognize the importance of good study skills in Social Studies and other fact based subjects, but it works for me.

Homeschool

While teaching in the Roane County at Harriman Middle Schools, I homebound student in all subjects every year for at least twenty years perhaps longer. I was consider quite good at this; hence, I was asked to do homebound instruction every year. I think that this experience qualifies me for homeschooling coupled with the fact that I am a very reliable person. You are free to ask for and get references.
